This machine loaded from the top, but was similar to a front load machine in the way it washed. It also had to be bolted to the floor much like the old bendix machines. It did actually rotate in opposite directions, but the washing action was still poor and spin was not that good either. They were not around very long in the 50's.

Staber washers

are like this. I nearly bought a Staber over a decade ago because I liked the logic of it. Apparently, good thing I didn't from what I've read on here. I think there are still some Euro washers that are horizontal axis but load from above?

Yes, most brands still have a few toploading models in their line here in Europe. They are especially very popular in Paris, they fit easier in their tiny apartments. There are washer/dryer combo's too. Exception to this is the UK. Lately there hasn't been a toploader H-axis available on the UK market.

I've seen old magazine ads for a Horton washer identical to the Launderall.
Identiical because it was rebranded; apparently, this Horton brand (which itself
would be doomed sometime in the '50s) acquired the rights after Jacobs went out of
business.
..Or, at least, that's the story I heard.
