Is it any wonder why Kenmore washers and dryers were in more homes than any other at that time with that kind of pricing? Personally, I thought these particular machines the ugliest ones ever produced. But they were cheap and they certainly worked quite well! The second set were the ones that Sears would occasionally have on sale for $98 for the washer and $68 for the dryer with a big full page add in the newspaper.

We had that BOL dryer new back in 1969...I remember emptying the lint filter when I was 5 or 6 on laundry day ...it was in the back of the drum to the right and looking at the timer...It's still in the basement at moms house and is used occasionally. Not the best looking kenmore design, but not the worst in my opinion.

it was no wonder back then. Sears was the nations largest retailer. Many towns with a population over 20,000 had a Sears store, and everyone had access to a catalogue, and malls were being built all over with Sears anchor stores.
That was a time when what also what was good for General Motors was good for the nation.
I read a book "On a clear day, you can see General Motors". Then Sears built their tower after the WTC opened in 1974.

That Kenmore Ruled!

Our family had a Kenmore washer similar to the $170 special advertised in the Sears ad. My grandfather bought it, and we inherited it when he died in the early 1970's. It didn't have the push buttons or dispensers of our old TOL (and trouble-prone) Kenmore purchased in the early 60's, but it worked well and without complaint. Being a Sears family (thanks to the credit card), my parents also bought a slant-console Kenmore gas dryer. It was installed in the garage, so I had to walk from the washer outside to the garage (no entry door here!) and put the clothes in the dryer. Oh well, it was far better than hanging up the laundry. I had enough chores to do as a teen!
