As we pause to commemorate Pearl Harbor, we think of lives of honorable men and women lost in defense of our country.

 

I guessing that the 9 year old machine mentioned in the ad was an AMP maybe with the problem with the insulation around the wires in the lid getting brittle and causing the components in the lid to not move freely anymore. If only Maytag had gone with a timed fill system they could have had an adjustable water level from the get go and less trouble, too.

 

I go through the West Hyattsville Station twice a day. That area, like so much of central Prince George's County, was heavily affected by white flight in the 60s. This family probably did not live there for many more years.

Looks like a 1964. The best of the best and the backbone that propelled Maytag to the top. Would love to walk into a store today and buy a few new in the box! And I know a lot of people who feel the same way.

Well, timed fill would only allow the shorter the cycle, the less water could be used, vs. a longer the the cycle, the excessive amount--so the woman in that house obviously made the variable water levels a necessity and a " bonus" feature of owning hat Maytag--those boys and even her own MSN of the house, could make the need and size of laundry loads unpredictable, especially given how just finishing a load of clothes for those guys can immediately (so the drop of a dirty sock) start up again...

Dave, what do you not understand about timed fills? There were several approaches. Yes, some timed fill machines sped up the timer and therefore had shorter cycles for low water level settings. Some machines like the Kelvinators used a separate shorter cycle for "delicates" and the lower water level. The Maytag did not use this approach, but had a fill period separate from the wash period. You cold set it to fill to several fill levels BEFORE the fill started and when the fill period was completed, the FULL 10 minute wash period began. The only part of the cycle that was shortened was the wash fill. The rinse fill had to be manually shortened if a lower water level in the rinse was desired. Maytag did not have a separate shorter cycle for the purpose of a lower water level in its time fill washers.

Don’t Know Much About ‘Rithmetic

Funny that the ad mentions a nine-year old machine, yet they are all standing around a (presumed) modern-day ‘64 model, with no older machine in sight. That ad certainly isn’t from nine years later in the 1970s judging from the outfits — you would think they would show the old still going strong along with the new...

The  gimmick in the ads was to show the new machine or washer dryer pair and play on the old machine's reliability.

I know of one woman who had that many boys because "I wanted a girl and I kept having boys". I also think the mother in the picture is thinking, "please, I need some of those little pills that the pope doesn't like."

Is that Maytag usually gave the names of family or at least Mr. and Mrs. X, or Mrs. X, but here nothing. Just "mother" and so forth.

Looks to me like stinting in the advertising department. They got together a family alright, but everything else.....

I know what you mean, it seems the guys were the star of the ad and she was "behind the couch". As if she was begging, "please, I need those little pills!"

Sorry, I don't mean to sound that "anti-timed" fill... I just have a native misunderstanding about the concept, that I'm glad some of you had pointed out, before evolution brought out metered-fill...

In fact, I am intrigued by the 'one big knob, one small knob seen on such', even if my personal preference dictates a liking/disliking what the small one does... AW, seems to help me adapt to being open towards more as I read along, and to the point where there is no appliance that I DON'T like--or that is can't come to terms with or simply understand...

(Now, to read over a critique from 30-years-ago on a movie video we wrote in school on TURTLE DIARY, on which I'd cited "two men getting into a brawl over a dirty stove"--and showing my fellow-classmates a very intricate drawing of an early-'60's GE Americana, (which I'd long-lost) for him to say, "the small area under that top oven would have conked the one guy's head" that I must'a wished the "You clean the cooker!" occurred under...)
