So does anyone know the story behind how Tide convinced the washer manufacturers to pack a box of their product in new washers? Did they pay the manufacturers, or just ship it to them free? And how did they keep competitors from doing the same? Have never seen anything about the back story on this.

Tide was not the only detergent packed into automatic washing machines. Dash was packed in front loaders. Various brands of dishwasher detergents were packed in various brands of dishwashers. If you read the fine print under the ads, it explains that the machine manufacturer has an agreement with the detergent manufacturer to not only pack a sample of the detergent in the machine, but also to feature them together in ads.
It was not only detergents, but also samples of rinse agent in dishwashers with a rinse agent dispenser and sometimes fabric softener samples in clothes washers with a dispenser. Our 1958 Lady came with Tide and Sta Puf samples.
By the way, those are a lot of red headed children between the mother and the delivery man. I wonder if there were other deliveries.

Well, guess her previous purchases were a Hotpoint refrigerator, range, dishwasher, and dryer. Maybe a little red haired boy will arrive in nine months.

When my mom got her Kenmore Model 60 around 1962, we got a box of tide, staypuff and a box of Sears laundry detergent.
When I bought my White-Westinghouse FL in ‘87 it came with a small box of All.
