This set is the same mechanism as the GE FF. The dryer is HUGE in comparison to the more traditional one that most are paired up with. I think this was toward the end of Hotpoint making washers and dryers for Penny's.

I so wish JCP had put their appliance offerings in their catalogs like Sears and Wards, we'd know so much more about them and the chronological progression. I have a scant bit of JCP service info, mostly for their solid tub HP clones from immediately before this POD set. By the agitator, this looks to be mid-70's as it the same as in my Lady Executive Hotpoint from 1974, the first of the GE rim-flo design for the Hotpoint brand.

The agitator is splashy and a tad more noisy than it's GE cousins, and to watch it, the rollover isn't super impressive but as we all know, rollover isn't necessarily indicative of better cleaning and I've had no complaints with it's ability.

Penny' s did a lot of local advertising especially in the newspaper and that is where I would see appliance ads. We didn't have a Wards in metro Atlanta, so Penny' s Penncrest brand was well known. I saw a lot of their laundry equipment over the years.

JC Penny appliances have not been too popular around here--I have barely ever seen... A very occasional discarded washer that was not a TOL like the ads boast, or maybe a refrigerator at a used appliance store is about all that comes to mind...

Remember those olive green repair vans, though...  Eventually General Electric & Hotpoint Customer Care boasted repairing JC Penny appliances, too...

O/T, but: There was a single-door fridge that I once saw & the little square at the top of the handle said: "Another Quality GE Product"...  --It was clearly a GE product & that insignia may as well have been JC Penny's mantra for their appliances...
