Gibson! I remember seeing these as prizes on The Price Is Right back in the day, in fact I think they were frequent showcase prizes. I remember seeing only one of these as a kid at some Dept store. They had it hooked up to demonstrate. I remember the tub was huge and the agitator was “different.” Think it was the first time I ever saw an indexing tub. As a kid, I was impressed. Thought the control panel was very clean and uncomplicated.

Anyone have any memories of Gibson?

I wonder when they quit making their appliances?

Barry, we had a Gibson harvest gold SxS with a flex type of tray in the ice maker design. The ice shape was like half a ball sphere. It was bought at the same store as the 1968 Waste King dishwasher--which was located off of The Southwest Freeway (HWY59) and Chimney Rock in Houston.

Removable console

While the concept of a removable console is commendable, the graphics in this ad are beyond moronic.  The feature is obviously of benefit to service people - so the graphic would have been much better if it illustrated a service tech standing there with the console in his hand.  As it is, it gives the impression that every housewife who passed home economics knows to remove her washer console at least once a month to dust and wipe up accidents.

15,625 hours of her life doing the laundry?

Assuming she spends 6 hours a week, times 52 weeks in a year, and maybe she's a laundry slave for 25 years until the last of her 10 children marries, goes off to college, joins the army, etc, that's 7800 hours. And then just her and husband she does 3 hours a week for the next 30 years, that's 4680 hours + 7800 = 12,480 hours.

Where does the 15,625 hours come from? So many assumptions to make. How many loads of wash per week? How many loads did Maytag's Mrs. Matthew Gross do per week?

My neighbor has been doing laundry for at least 71 years, as she and her husband married in 1950. Until 1972, she had a Maytag wringer, and got a Kenmore dryer around 1957. Then got a new Kenmore 800 set (Avocado) in 1972, and has had a couple more Kenmore washers, and another Kenmore dryer since.

Gibson was a good brand at one time. Some friends got a range that his grandmother had bought in 1948, and it was still working good when they redid their kitchen in the mid 80's. His wife wanted a 30" model, and I think they've had three new ones since. By the time of the washer ad, Gibson was WCI, so the same as Kelvinator and Hamilton. To the best of my knowledge, Gibson never made laundry equipment until they were part of WCI.

My mother had a Gibson fridge after her coppertone GM Frigidaire fridge died around 1983 or so.  It lasted several years and was still running when it was replaced by an Estate SxS from Sam's in early 2000's.  The SxS is still going strong.  I know it's a WP product.

Our neighbor across the street got a Gibson dishwasher for mother's day one year.  I don't know how it performed.  I don't think she used it much.
