Now that machine is slightly reminiscent of the Lady Kenmore machines wouldnt you say. I have never seen a Whirlpool with the push button cycle selectors before. I wonder if any are still in existence.

PUSH BUTTON WHIRLPOOLS
WP made this push button style washer for 5 years or so the POD is the first of this style 1960 I think. I have two 1961 WPs like this one is pink the other sunny yellow. I would love to have a matching dryer if you find me a pink or yellow dryer you can have the other washer. The last of this style WP washer had black buttons and walnut look insert around the timer Dial This last WP IMPERIAL MARK 12 was the first WP washer to have a three speed motor and the MAGIC CLEAN lint filter. I have a pair of these in white the washer has a SUDS MISER system and the dryer is gas with a window and ultra violet light. It also has the two speed blower and two level gas burner it goes from 37000 BTUs on regular to 25000 BTUs on gentle.

Excuse the exuberance, folks, but I'm goin' nuts here at eight o'clock in the evening in my living room.
My whole life--MY WHOLE LIFE--I could never get to the bottom of Whirlpool, the Mother of all WOO-WOO's making all those fabulous Kenmore Keyboards. Why oh why, I moaned and groaned did they not make their own version. Why have I never seen a pushbutton Whirlpool like the Lady K's.
Now finally, finally, after all these years of perplexity and befuddlement, my dream comes true. Aworg is God. ;-> Isn't it beautiful, and they kept the gorgeous glass and chrome waterfall filter, instead of using the self-cleaning, horribly hidden one. And a SUDS-MISER. Oh oh oh. And the small main dial is like the 62 Multi's. Very sheik.
And then to find out my friend John has 4 of them. Well Halleluia! The WP LK is alive and well. Wonder if there is a thread somewhere or pix. Anyone who knows please let us know.

1960 Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII

Being that this is a 1960 Whirlpool Imperial Mark XII, I would go out on the limb and say that THIS particular model of Whirlpool actually preceeded the later Lady Kenmores that would come out a short time later.
The one that's in today's POD had a "clamshell" like left portion of the panel in which Maytag has modeled their control panel like sometime later. But at the right of the panel where all the buttons and the timer are, that would be the style that would later debut on the 1962(??)-63 Lady Kenmore Model 800.
Now being that this model Whirlpool was the TOL model of 1960, I tend to wonder, did this model actually have a three-speed motor and a tub light??? I know the early Lady Kenmores (no matter if they were the "all push-button" models of 1959-61, or the first of the "click-stop" models of 1962-63) did have a tub light. And three-speed motors did not debut on the Lady Kenmore until 1964. Also at that time, the Lady Kenmores did have a Self-Cleaning Filter also. And from looking at today's POD, I don't think the 1960 TOL Whirlpool had that.
So then, I tend to think, wonder, and lastly, ask..... when did Whirlpool FIRST come out with a Three-Speed Washer??? As far as I know, the only one I know that exists came out in 1968-69. And I think that "RevinKevin" has that model.
That is a beautiful looking TOL Whirlpool that is shown in today's POD.
But I did recall seeing a pink one somewhere on this site recently, as someone must have rescued it from the crusher or something. Did someone has since took possession of this beautiful machine???

It is a gorgeous machine, maybe this is where Kenmore got its inspiration for the keyboard Lady K's that came out. Ya gotta admit, it looked pretty sophisticated for its time. Once I get moved into my house and out of this apartment, Im hittin the first used appliance store and gettin me my "classic" kenmore back. The woo-woo and grind clunk sounds are true washing magic.
I think the PotD is not a 3-speed machine.
This is John's aforementioned pink 1961. It's seems not a 3-speed either. Is the blank button under the Wash 'n' Wear section for suds return but with Suds worn off, or is it functional for something else such to unlock the timer for manual selection?
This is another of John's machines. It is 3-speed. Notice the separate Low Agitate button. As I recall, Whirlpool referred to the three agitate speeds as High, Medium, and Low. Also as I recall, the last 3-speed belt-drive Whirly was the LAA-9800 in 1974-1975. The following LDA series dropped back to 2-speeds.

And your first pic shows the hard to read mystery button next to the Suds in the POD: pre-wash or rinse. Thanks, I couldn't get it.
Interesting that the second model has a super wash. Which machine is older?
About your question: Is it possible that it is a "dead" button for the non-suds models, since so many people bought the machines equipped with the suds-miser? Just a thought.

Mike the blank button is just there it doesn't move or push. However if you remove the timer assembly there is a small lever that can be flipped and then the button will work to cause the timer to stop when turned by hand @ the suds return position on the timer dial. The 1965 LKM had a similar hidden suds button if you removed the wide spin only button you could install a spin only button and a suds return button in its place. The complete timer assembly was the same.
