Kitchenaid were definitely THE dishwasher from the invention of dishwashers through at least the 60's and according to some, even later than that. There was a time that having a Kitchenaid dishwasher meant you had the best that money could buy. In the beginning they had something no other manufacturer was able to duplicate, the spray arm. It was not till the early 60's that all the other brands were able to incorporate spray arms into their machines and most dishwashers operated in a similar way. Maytag came out with their dishwasher in either the very late 60's or early 70's that definitely rivaled the Kitchenaid dishwasher and then others did the same. Whirlpool now has the Kitchenaid brand and still makes a good dishwasher. The Kenmore Elite I have is made like the Kitchenaid of today.

I used an early Maytag DW as a daily driver and IMO it could not compare with the KitchenAid in capacity or drying ability.

The Whirlpool Jetstream DW's were very good performing machines and unfortunately there are very few survivors.
