Tide always had clever advertisements. As well as Tide seemed to clean, it certainly was hard on the machines it was used in. This GE was the beginning of the Filter Flo models that became fairly popular. I'm sure that feature sold many a machine for GE. The solid tub GE machine was a pretty good washer for the time. It held a decent amount of clothes and washed, rinsed and spun out fairly well too. It did have a small sediment ejector at the bottom of the tub, but still was poor at getting rid of sand and sediment like typical solid tub machines. Overall a good machine though and a good choice at the time.

My great aunt had a 59, the last year with no tub brake. We moved into her house in 1972 after she passed away. I was about 12 at the time. It lasted until around the time I graduated from high school when the tranny went out. It lasted a good 15 years with no repairs.

The solid tub and perforated-basket design washers were pretty much the same--except for the updated wash basket.  The same huge outer tub on both--hence the water hog.
