These machines were new designed Franklin made in the late 60's, early 70's. They were very poorly designed, in my opinion. The washer was HUGE, that much is true and did wash, rinse and spin well, but they were quite flimsy and tended to walk when spinning and were not very durable. The matching dryer would not hold even close to what the washer could wash and had a tendency to overheat and shut down until the motor cooled down. All in all, they were very cheesy, again in my opinion. Kenmore/Whirlpool of the same vintage held about as much in the large capacity and were far more durable and dependable. Even Norge made machines held up better than these did. It was kind of a shame, since the solid tub machines had been pretty good units. Anyone I knew who had a set of these had problems with them.

My mom had a 1963 Coronado set. Solid tub and with all of the bells and whistles. It washed and rinsed very well but finally vibrated itself to destruction. (my father was elated. She bought a Kenmore washer but still used the gas dryer which worked well. She gave the dryer to my brother and his wife when they were married in 1982; they used it until 1992.

The twin-tub looks exactly like a Hoovermatic with the single side impeller... the lint filter on the automatic top-loader is redolent of a GE Filterflo, UK Hotpoint top-loaders also had it.

Coronados did like to go for a walk; especially on wooden floor installations. I knew two people with them (earlier models than the POD) and both tended to shake and walk if loads were off balance. My friends the McGuires' early '60s Coronado was in a passthrough between their back door and the kitchen. On more than one occasion the washer worked its way forward and blocked the entrance.

They were cheap machines sold at our local Gambles hardware store, but I loved the indexing tubs, overflow rinses (for the solid tubs) and the snorting, raucous noises they made.

Coronados did like to go for a walk

Gives me the vision of the washer sitting by the front door, holding a leash, when the owner gets home.

Completely off topic...but for some reason when I hear the Coronado name, I think of old tube radios. I think I even had one when I was a teenager. I also think my mother might have had a deep fat fryer branded by them. That fryer broke when I was in  elementary school--so if it was Coronado, it may have had poor quality like the washers!

Coronado was not a manufacturer, it was the house brand of Gamble-Skogmo stores.

Yes, Franklin made machines for several different companies under several different badges. Wizard Citation, Bradford and Corodado were three of them.
