I noticed the plug for "Ted Malone" at the bottom of the ad and found out that he was quite a broadcast and journalism star starting before WWII. He even had an association with the Library of Congress.

 

The Laundromat probably has the continuously variable water temperature control. The dials look like the Laundromat in the Beltsville Museum and it has that feature.

I'd imagine the double doors on a Laundromat made loading/unloading slightly less convenient, but allowed for a sleek look. Boy, a variable temp control? That's a high-tech feature for the time.

Interesting the early term was 'electric sink' rather than dishwasher, although I suppose that made sense as the sink/garbage disposer and dishwasher often came as a single unit.

Westinghouse: Another brand neutered by WCI. Appliance divisions must not have been great moneymakers in relation to their costs as quite a number were ailing enough to allow WCI to swoop in for a bargain when corporate parents gave them the boot.

Ted Malone: I love listening to old news broadcasts (radio or TV). A quick search at YouTube yielded nothing. Will have to check other sources.

Malone's real name was Frank Alden Russell. He was called to fill in for another performer who was late and was to read poetry to fill in air time. He did not want to read poetry under his real name so he went under this invented stage name. His progran apparently was poetry read with acompaniement by theater organ, a popular entertainment formula in radio's early days and probably last hear on the late night program "Moon River" from WLW in Cincinnati He donated his archives to the University of Missouri at Kansas City  as the Ted Malone Collection and published an anthology of his work Ted Malone Antholgy. The poetry program was "Between the Bookends."

Moon River

Something about the Moon River Organ, poem and WLW for organ and radio buffs. There are few things better than music in the darkness for carrying you to the real of sleep. Even my modern clock radio has a sleep setting to play for an hour and then turn off. I always found that if I fell asleep to the radio, I did not wake to the radio.

In my opinion, I think what happened to the different appliance makers that WCI acquired was the result of the end of the appliance boom in the 50's and 60's. By the end of the the 60's, just about everyone that was going to have an automatic washer and dryer had one. There were so very many different manufacturers of washers and dryers along with other appliances that there became more than the demand for them. Companies like Whirlpool/Kenmore, Maytag, Frigidaire and a few others were able to hold on for quite a while because of customer loyalty and just that they had a good product. But even many of them finally folded and sold out.
