What year is this Frigidaire washer? Is it a unimatic? I find it strange that Frigidaire didn't make a 2 speed machine till 1959. Seems that Whirlpool/Kenmore had a two speed machine much sooner than that.

The dryer that matches this model is or was in the museum. Friends had this washer, but only the maid was allowed to be around it. I was hustled past the laundry area and upstairs. It died while they were away on sabbatical in 1960 or so and was replaced with a Kenmore.

If you can use the Searcholator, you can find a discussion about why the Unimatic could not be a two speed mechanism so it was not until 1959 when the multi-speed belt-driven mechanism was introduced that Frigidaire could have a two speed washer, but the 1140 rpm spin was gone.

1955 Unimatic

This was the first year that Frigidaire introduced an "outer"tub. Before this the water was spun directly into the outside cabinet. My Grandmother had this machine in white. It lasted until 1967 when the torque spring broke and was replaced with a GE. Wish I had kept this washer.

One of my mom's best friends had this washer and its companion was a Westinghouse dryer.  It was a family of 5.  It was still running, along with the dryer, when a Custom Deluxe 1-18 in red was bought to replace them and update laundry.
