In early 1956 my grandparents moved into a brand new track home in Pinole, Calif. that had all of these appliances in the kitchen, except the wall refrigerator/freezer and the 30” range. Grandma had the wall oven and electric cooktop instead, oh so very modern for the time. They were turquoise, and very beautiful.
Grandma was the very first member on either side of the family to have a dishwasher, and I was mesmerized by it. The GE washer/dryer combo was problematic though, and all of the new home owners that elected this option were unhappy with them. GE came out to every home, took out the “guts”of the machines and left the front panel and controls so there wouldn’t be a blank space and gave each homeowner a new Filter Flo washer and matching dryer as a replacement. They used these machines until 1964, when they downsized into a doublewide mobile home for retirement.
Since the development was still not fully sold out they still had model homes that I recall viewing with my Mom, and I thought those wall refrigerator/freezers were something else! I wanted my parents to buy one of these homes with all the bells and whistles, by my Dad hated track developments, so that was the end of that.
