Lawd, what a mess. I feel so badly for these folks. It gave me a great deal of pride, to hear President Obama's pledge to help and provide aid to this devastated country. No intent to diminish our efforts in the middle east. It just gives one a good feeling to help those, who need, want and asked for our help. alr2903

Unfortunately,we probably will not be able to get there in time. Although,I hope we do,their air tower was pulled down by the 7.0 monster quake so,their signals are no longer working which means they have absolutely no trafic control and no incoming or outgoing flights. We're sending one ship from Baltimore which will be ready to leave once the supplies and crew needed are on board. There are other ships closer that are also going to attempt their assistance but, they're probably not equiped with the supplies neede i.e.drinking water, first aid and medical supplies.Let's all hope and pray for not only the folks who are in dire need for help but, also the crews that are putting their own lives at stake to try and help save these innocent folks.

The latest information is that the runway is usable, but the control tower is not. So the airport will be treated just like any other non controlled airport. Everyone will be using UNICOM.
The runway is long enough that C-130's can easily get in there.
VOR, ILS approaches are usable and stable. The only thing that is really out is their radar system.
The airport is open only to private and humanitarian flights.

> President Obama has asked former President George W. Bush to help with relief efforts there.

Misery loves company.

Bumping this topic cause it is infomative.

Here, overseas in holland there was a progam named Giro 555 on 4 television channels, It started in the noon of Tuesday 16 Jan.

Didn't the earthquake also hit the nearby Dominican Republic? Why are we not hearing about damage to that country on the shared island of Hispanola?

Is it still called "Giro" 555? I thought that since "Postbank" has become "ING" we have to call these accounts "betaalrekeningen" instead of "girorekeningen".

For the non-Dutch: the "Postbank" was the successor of the state owned "Postcheque en Girodienst". Its accounts were called "girorekeningen". Other banks didn't use that name. After the "Postbank" was incorporated by the "ING" bank the name dissappeared.

At the SW transmitter site where I work-the agency has increased the number of broadcasts going to Hati-and increased their priority-we have to run their shows over others if there is a transmitter problem.Short wave STILL gets thru when the other technologies fail.Fromt the feedback we hear from listeners in Hati-they are listening to battery powered SW radios powered by car batteries and such. And to think some of our transmitters are 20,40,60yrs old.still going-we keep them going.

On a bulletin board at my trans site-just noticed a notice that the US military is distributing Solar-crank operated AM-FM-SW portable radios to Haiti. The radios will not require batteries or line power to play.

Thanks boiz.

I didn't think of that. Giros/Envios in the Spanish-speaking communities here means "money transfers."

I remeber during times of famine Hatians would be shown on television mixing dirt/earth in with flour and sugar to make "cookies" for food. Extreme poverty. The whole situation, and the natural disasters, is so sad.
