didnt think i would say this but, i would be sad if our used kenmore or "shredmore" had this very fate! i actually like it however, the ge before it could gladly go to that shredder that plastic P.O.S.!!!! i like these older shredmores just like there DD WP cuzo's......

Plastic GE-remember a good freind bought one of those-and only a couple years later he was using the machine and-it BLEW-water all over the laundry room floor along with peices of plastic shrapnel.Both of us gathered up the machine and its peices-and off to the dump outside of Richmond Va.They had us dump it in an area where a giant "refuse compactor" vehicle was parked-waiting to do its thing.We wanted to see that landfill compactor walk over that miserable machine!But alas other work awaited us.
Out near where I live in greenville-I saw a forelorn plastic GE outside waiting for the Trash truck "Krusher"It sat there for weeks-then found its way to the woods near the road.Someone vandalized the machine-tore it apart and took its control bridge.Then one day it was gone-guess the crusher finally nabbed it-The Grinch finally kidnapped GE and freinds?Pile of trash with it--

Wonder how long its going to be before the newer front load washers sold at inflated prices die and then meet their fate in the maws of krushers and shredders?When I visited the Dixon swap shop in Ayden several weeks ago saw a Maytag FL Neptune waiting in Mr. Dixons "Krush" pile.He loads the duds on his pickup-then takes them to a salvage place near Ayden-and the crane with a clamshell bucket picks the poor "condemmed" off his truck-when the clamshell grabs the machines they get crushed-then dumpted into a pile for another crusher.EJE salvage here in Greenville has one of those large SSI shredders like what ground up that washer in my earlier post-EJE got the grinder to process flood debris from Floyd.Oh yes in Mr Dixons truck was A few DD machines to join the Neptune.

Misc. notes on Shredmores and real Ladies

I liked the note above from Danemodsandy regarding "real" ladies and their characteristic "clunk" of the bottons. I have recently put a lot of work into a 1972 Lady K, some of which involved removing the entire control console from the machine top. I was shocked at how heavy the panel is vs. a 'regular' machine's panel, even of the same maker and era. The console is probably heavier than the entire cabinet and panel of my 1993 DD "shredmore".

I know what the sentiment is here regarding the DD machines, and I generally agree, but to me at least they seem better than some of the alternatives available today, and I find they are easier on clothes if not overloaded. I have retired my DD for now in favor of a couple recently refurbed BD machines I have, but I'd still rather use my DD if offered a new GE, a new Frigidaire, etc.

There is no comparison though to the wonderful 1960s and 1970s ladies though, that is for sure!

Don't get me wrong about the DD top loaders.

Gordon is right about the DD machines, they are better than these so called front loaders coming from overseas.I just wish they would put more quality into them. Here's what gets me,about 4 months before I got married, I bought a new Kenmore washer for my mother back in 2000, so she would have a dependable machine. About a year and a half ago, the plastic lid switch broke,and I had to replace it.I paid good money for this machine, and I find out that it has a lot of plastic parts in it, come on. Also, I'm going to have to sand the rust around the bleach dispenser, and repaint around it.
Because of my mother's age, and health, she is moving in with her sister. I will be getting the machine back, and my wife and I are going to use it. Hey, I paid for it, I want my money's worth out of it. But, it won't be as graceful as the BD machines were, oh well, with proper care, it should last a while. At least the lid opens the traditional Kenmore way like it should be. Have a nice day.

I agree with you at 100% if its not a side opening lid its not a kenmore washer in my book i say its more like a whirlpool washer in disguse with the kenmore name

My parents bought theirs in 1999, and I was happy with it, mostly because it still looked like a Kenmore with it's side opening lid. It was a good performer for 5 years until my parents sold the house and left it behind.

Kenmore

I had a Kenmore in the early 90's it had the dual action agitator, and dispensers for detergent, bleach, and fabric softener, with the matching dryer. My mother bought them for me when I moved into my trailer. I had them for about three year, then I had to move into an apartment building, so I gave them back to her to store in case I was able to move into a house, but after a couple years I told her to sell them and keep the money.
