Poor monitor top attacked by the 1970's

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Looks like a high quality paint job at least, and it may have all four feet.   From the accumulation of dust on the cabinet bottom, it appears to have been sitting for a very long time.

When I read "Used to work fine . . ." a red flag went up.

Not ammonia

Almost certainly electrical wiring, if the closed system, then a poor valve design - doesn't seem to make it past 50 years of use. Easy workaround for that.

But the colour - O! my paws and whiskers! Smoked avocado? Drawing and quartering is too good for the monster who perpetrated this rape upon a Monitor Top!

No wonder the poor thing up and died.

Travis,

You know them better than I do. By '36, that silly needle valve was gone - I bet it's electrical. If I had the money, I'd make an offer just to get that hideous avocado green off of her. Poor wee bairn. Nobody deserves that.

Well, maybe WCI 'Frigidaire' washers with the Franklin transmission.....

Almost all monitor tops use sulfur dioxide as the refrigerant. It's true that many have been destroyed by careless defrosting and handling.

It's not that hard to rewire a monitor top unit. Though I understand the temptation to assume it wouldn't work, most original units have very deteriorated cords that would scare all but the most determined to test. They're often so bad that you plug the fridge into the extension cord and then plug in the extension cord. I have never understood the paranoia of 120 volt power. Provided you're not in a wet location, if you test something with an extension cord, the worst that can happen is you blow the fuse or trip a circuit breaker. I have never seen an appliance create fire and cause harm from testing.

I just thought it was amusing that someone gave it a 1970's makeover in my least favorite color!

If you look at the interior, you'll see that the shelves are in good shape. If this unit would have leaked, the interior would be very rusted. That doesn't mean that some California enviro-nazi hasn't emptied it to protect her family. Those things happen due to all the misinformation about these old units.

LOL!  I wouldn't have a living room for long.  In spite of his issues with equilibrium and being a major fall risk (more like fall reality) after his stroke, Dave would manage to literally kick me out of the house!
