When I was a kid,my Dad was a volenteer fireman and at the firehouse bthere was a soda machine that had the brand "Popular Club" sodas. They had cola, grape, orange,Almond Smash,Cherry Smash, birch beer, rootbeer, lemon lime and soda waqter. I haven't seen tghat brand in almost thirty years.Does anyone here remember Popular Club? Are they defunked? Were they just a local brand?

I have never heard of that brand. Since you mentioned birch beer as one of the flavors, I presume this was an East Coast brand so that might explain why I've never heard of it.

I do recall back in the 70's a store/brand called the Pop Shoppe, but that's as close as I can come to what you've described.

Kentucky's Best

Here in Kentucky, we have a little-known soda that is quite tasty. Has a bit of a ginger ale taste, and other very unique flavors perfectly intertwined. Well, now I'm craving one so I guess I'll take my nightly walk down to the store.

There's a shop in Los Angeles on York Blvd. in the Eagle Rock area that carries tons of "lost" brands of soda. They might have Popular Club, but I have no idea what the name of the place is. I'll ask my sister next time I talk to her. She lives in that neighborhood.

Never Heard Of It ----BUT!!!

Here in North Carolina we have a great soft drink called Cheerwine,it is a cherry flavored drink made in Salisbury,REALLY GOOD.

How about Country Club!

I have never seen that brand here in NJ,I do remember a brand called Country Club soda. You had to buy a case of 12 bottles if I remember right, and when you finished them all, you would return the bottles and buy new ones. Very early form of recycling and good soda too!

In PA, we have A-Treat. They made Almond Smash at one time as well. I really liked Diet Almond Smash but I haven't seen that flavor in 20 years. I still like a good root or birch beer or red cream soda now & then. A-Treat is an independent bottler. I just saw they have a website. Wow, the stuff is pricey online but cheap in the stores.

Here in norther New Jersey we had Seilheimer soda from Hackensack, they had a great slogan on the lable "So-da-licious". I also remember Brookdale and Hammer, all in 28 ounce refillable glass bottles. In 1979 a case of Hammer came to only $2.15 if you turned in a case of empties. Those of you might remember the 5 second television ads on chanel 5 for Hammer soda, they'd show a case of soda and the announcer would say "Hammer -- sparkling beverage".

Today here in Haledon we have the Boylan Bottle Works. Possibly the best birch beer made today, in glass bottles and made with real sugar. The black cherry is amazing.

In Baltimore, Almond Smash was made by Suburban Club ("Suburban soft drinks; you just can't sip 'em!") Apparently, you can still get it in random places, but it's hard to find.

In Massachusetts, Cott was the brand to drink ("It's Cott to be good!"). I can still taste their white cream soda. *Deliciousness*.

Kenwashesmonday is correct!

Boylan's is a really good birch beer. I do remember Hammer, Brookdale, and - of course - Hoffman's. Opening credits of the Soprano's shows the huge bottle that marked the Hoffman plant, later Pabst Beer. Country Club escapes me, I remember the ice cream but not soda.

Scranton's Crystal Club has the best ginger ale. If you watch The Office you'll see a Crystal Club vending machine in their breakroom. I always pick up a case or two whenever I visit my cousins in PA.

In Cleveland, there was

"Cotton Club" bottlers, and among their offerings was a wonderful citrus blend soda called "50/50." Had grapefruit flavour in it, and it was marvellously refreshing.

Right this minute, I am enjoying a Diet 7up Pomegranate. Wish it wasn't seasonal.

MOXIE!?!?!?! That's one that I just can't handle. It's still sold around here. I see it in some markets and even in a few beer distributers.
