Hi ladies and gents...long post here...sorry. I just replaced my 2001 Kenmore Ultra Wash Dishwasher with a 2006 Portable Ultra Wash. I hate it with a passion! It washes incredibly, but the racks are horrible! The lower rack is smaller than the old one..2 dinner plates will not fit side by side. The upper rack only holds my glassware in the outer rows of the rack. My coffee mugs only fit in the middle row. Any of my mugs or glasses have to stagger over the pins if I use the second rows. I am running this dishwasher much more often and with less dishes than the old one. Anyway, Sears has given me 30 more days to decide if I want a refund. My only other option for a dishwasher is the new Maytag Tall-Tub Portable. Does anyone think Maytag is the way to go? I'm concerned about the quality and wash ability. Thanks for letting me rant.

Hi! Michael Jakeseacrest, welcome to this great Club. I've got a Built-In Maytag Taller Tub, with only the 2-Rack's instead of the 3-Rack that was introduced by Maytag, at the same time a few years ago.

Now, from what I just experienced with helping a Friend looking for a replacement Dishwasher for the other side of her Duplex, where her Tenant's live, I would recommend {even though I really like my Maytag} a Whirlpool Dishwasher, for your replacement.

"BTW" I'm curious as others will be, as to why you had to change from a Built-In to a Portable Dishwasher? Oops, maybe from how you worded about your 1st Dishwasher, the 2001 Ultra Wash, I've assumed that it was a Built-In, was it? Seeing that you did mention that the newer Ultra Wash was a Portable, please clarify.

I'm sure that other's will Post their opinions and I'm certainly glad that they will, but I'm glad that I had the upper hand of 1st Posting to you.

Good Luck with whatever you end up doing, please keep us informed as to what happens.

Thank you for the welcome. They are both portables. As far as the Whirlpool, the upper rack is the same as the new Kenmore. My old dishwasher had a terraced upper rack like the short tub Maytag. All my glasses and mugs fit between all the rows. Out of the 5 rows in the upper rack of the Kenmore, only the outer edges are wide enough for my dishes. If I try to put my glasses or mugs in the secondary rows, they don't touch the bottom of the rack. The pins are kinda curved so it kills some of the width. I hope this helps explain.
 
By all means,return the Kenmore,seeing that it's loathsome to you.The Maytag will wash very well,but the quality? That is another story.The old belt-drive Maytags,with dual deep racking held a ton of dishes,even pots on both racks.Bob would be proud!
 
Back in 92 I house sat for a friend and they had a Maytag with the reverse racks. I actually thought it was really cool to load. I think if they still made them I would get one. If I remember correctly it cleaned like a champ. i put some gross dishes in that one at the time. I wasn't and still isn't much of a pre-rinser. I'll soak crusty pots and baking dishes but that's it!

Hi! Michael, as an alternate idea, do you happen to stil have your 1st Kenmore Ultra Clean Dishwasher? If you do, is it possible that the Lower and Upper Racks from it would fit into your new Kenmore Untra Clean Dishwasher? That would solve your Lower and Upper Rack problem's and hopefully give you the Capacity and felxibility that you miss.

If not, maybe you can check out Craigslist and on E-Bay for an older Maytag Reversed Rack Portable Dishwasher, that will fit your needs.

Maytag

My mom, my sister and I all have Maytag dishwashers. Mom's is the oldest, 6 years and mine is the newest, 4 years. They clean perfectly. No prerinsing, inexpensive and relatively quiet. None of us have had a repair. But then, go figure, none of us have had a Maytag washer repair either. We must have good Maytag karma.

Bob - you and I are most definitely cut from the same cloth - no pre-rinsing, ever!! From the oven to the table to the dishwasher!! Of course, we've both got TOL GEs!!

Hi Jake! I have a Maytag Jetclean II tall-tub portable dishwasher that I bought about 3 months ago when I moved into my new house. First things first, this dishwasher cleans like nothing I've seen. I once put in all of the drip pans from my stove that had burnt on who-knows-what on them. I had no intentions of them coming out clean. MUCH to my surprise my Maytag blasted them SPOTLESS!! it cleans burnt on baking sheets, cassarole dishes, you name it. The amazing part is I only use the light cyle. I think I used the normal cycle once or twice. It gets run just about every day or every other day. OK, now for what I don't like about it.. Number 1, it's LOUD!! at least from what I'm used to it's loud. I got used to it though. Number 2, become friends with the Light Cycle, ANY other cycle takes FOREVER. I once used the heavy cycle and the damn thing ran for just under 3 hours. On the normal cycle it runs for just about 2 hours. I don't use heated dry because my hot water is so damn hot that dishes dry themselves with the residual heat. On the light cycle it runs for about an hour to an hour and a half. Other than that, I could NOT ask for more or a better dishwasher.. Hope this helps
 
Well I'm gonna bite the bullet and get the Maytag. Sears is going to give me a refund on the Kenmore and schedule a pick up. I'll keep everyone posted. Thanks for the advice.
 
I think you'll like the Maytag. I've had one since December and it's absolutely the most versatile machine for loading. It also cleans like a champ. Which model are you getting? I have the TOL 8591 and I'm very happy with it.

There are pictures of my Maytag DW in the Imperial Forum, at thread #7179 (Would Bob Approve?).

Pictures start at posting #143931. The outside of it is a plain SS door. There are pics of it loaded and one of the hidden control panel.
 
So...Lowe's dropped off my new Maytag Tall Tub Portable Dishwasher. Naturally I let my dishes sit in the sink since Friday to test out this bad boy. I just loaded it and ran a rinse cycle until after dinner tonight. I cannot believe how quiet it is compared to the Kenmore. Second, after the rinse cycle all traces of everything on the dishes are gone! I only ran it for 4 minutes just to see and I am astonished! I'm also amazed that my dinner plates fit in the top rack! To quote the Maytag Dishwasher commercial in the video downloads,"I wish I started out with a Maytag!"
 
Glad you like your new Maytag! I figured you would. I think they're great. Like you, I've started to load dinner plates in the top rack and it's really opened up a lot of real estate in the bottom rack for pots/pans/casseroles. Not as quiet as a Bosch, but they're certainly not loud at all.
