we are looking for a portable Dishwaser for our apartment.
What brand would you reccomend we are trying to not spend that much?

IMHO-

I liked my WP portable a whole lot!
I would also consider a Frigidaire, got it for my friends and they love it.

If you don't pay for hot water GE is decent too (in terms of results). Not an economizer of water though.

In my book, a square open lower racks with silverware to the side and no cut-outs or tower reigns supreme.

Just be careful that the model you choose has a food-waste disposer. Soem mannufacturers like WP lately puts it's REAL el-cheap model on wheels and the manual filter (square shaped, in rear of bottom)stinks.

I persnoally like a timer as oposed to a chip, in that the cycle can be modifeed and the water temp-boost can be bypassed if you need to get the machine away from the sink quicker.

New option for those higher end DWs. Uses no detergent and only one final hotwater rinse to elimate those annoying paw prints and other spots. For extra sanitation use the anti-flee rinse option which heats the water to 155 degrees.
Drying is provided by the re-pet-ative tail wagging.

Terry, I looked around for you. Lowes has the GE Nautilus GSC3200 in white for $367 and the GSC3400 for $399.

I looked at Bestbuy and the same models are $20 more than at Lowes.

Presently, Sears has the best offer as far as I'm concerned. Sears has its Model #17679 on sale for $399 ($80 off). This is based on Whirlpool's PowerClean wash system (tried & true and is NOT the el cheapo filtering system like Toggle described (that's the DuraWash system). It's mechanical controls and a very good performer. Inside, there is a funnel in the middle of the bottom rack that has water shot through it to feed the upper wash arm. It's available in black only and the same ends 10/22. There is a Whirlpool Dp840 for $399, THAT'S the DuraWash model.

There is the Whirlpool DP940 (in white only) for $499. The similiar Kenmore is $549.

The GE Nautilus also has a tower the rises up through the middle of the bottom rack to feed its top spray arm.

The $399/$479 and the $549 Kenmore portables are the only ones offering a third wash level that sprays down on the top rack of some fashion.

I'm quite pleased with my

GE GSC3200, but again, it was a gift from friends.

It cleans well, if loaded properly. It's very quiet for a portable.

I'd get it again.

GET AN LG !!!!! You can't hear them,they have three speeds,all stainless steel,hard food disposer,hidden heating element,adjustable upper rack,tall tub,does a 16 place setting,and uses about 6 gallons of water.

Danby makes a counter-top model (with a window!) that will handle the dishes from dinner for four people plus a little. Cost is between $150 - $200 and has a sani-wash cycle as well as the usual range of cycles including rinse-and-hold. I'm not sure about the disposer function but you can download the brochure from the Danby website and find out. And even though the cost is low, Danby products are generally excellent quality.

I would have one right now except that it's just a little bit too tall to fit under my cabinets. I could probably build a special mounting for it between the two cabinets above the sink, and might end up doing that anyway, as long as the hoses will reach.
