Good Ironing is Dry Ironing!
The wax paper would be for the shoe. Once you're done ironing, I used to run a couple of sheets of wax paper through mine. It kept the shoe nice and shiny.
Also, after a lot of experimenting, I dampened my laundry like my mother did. Fully dry the clothes, then either use the ketchup bottle with the sprinkler head on it or a light mist of water from a spray bottle. Put the clothes in a plastic bag for a few hours, then iron. You can also keep the bag of damp clothes in the fridge overnight if you have the room.
On a couple of the machines I had, the padding was pretty packed down. This would cause the broken button problem. The roll was just too hard. By repadding the roll, no more broken buttons.
And with the right mix of heavy starch, you can get shirts to stand up by themselves with a very nice finish!
