Portable washers

A friend is looking for a portable washer to use in his condo since there is very limited space. I told him to watch for a vintage Kenmore or Whirlpool model on craigslist or look in used appliance stores. Aside from that, are there any new models he should consider? Thanks for any feedback.

Aside from the Asian and European offering (Avanti), really only one manufacturer makes top loading portable washing machines for the USA market. Whirlpool, Kenmore, Summit, Crosley, GE, and perhaps a few other brands are all made by Brastemp in Brazil.

Vintage units are fine, but the older they are count on at least few issues (leaks most common), and parts are becoming rare. Of choice I'd take the belt drive portables over a DD, as the former are somewhat easier to repair and parts a tad cheaper (just), that is if one can find them.

... and the models made in Brazil and sold in the US as portables are freestanding here in Brazil.

The Kenmore which has a "smile" on the lid is an old Brastemp model (Brastemp Clean) and later sold as Consul (the budget brand)

Yes beware of leaks in older machines, especially if you have downstairs neighbors. One may want to consider buying new.
