Cheat and use dry potatoes or the real thing works well if you have it ready. You can use either sweet or white potatoes.

Portuguese Sweet Bread
In a large mixer bowl combine:
1/4 cup instant potatoes
2/3 cup boiling water
1/4 cup powdered milk
1/2 cup soft butter
Mix on medium speed and set aside.
In a small bowl combine
2/3 cup warm (105 degrees) water
1/2 teaspoon sugar
2 packages dry yeast
Let foam and add to the potato mixture with
2 cups flour
3 eggs (room temperature
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon orange zest
Combine on low and then beat on high for 5 minutes to develope the gluten.

There are raisins in this batch, do what ever you like with yours.

Now the hard part

You can finsih the dough by hand if you don't have a mixer with dough hooks

Turn to low speed and add additional flour 1/4 cup at a time until a smooth soft dough forms. Let raise unitl doubled and punch down. Let raise again.

It feels just a.........

Good dough feels just like a new born babies behind.

Shap the dough into a log and then roll into a cyclinder 14 inches long (Know what's white and 9 inches? Absolutely nothing) Coil the dough and place it in a 10 inch greased pan. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with liberal amounts of sugar. Let raise again until doubled

Done to a Golden Turn

Bake the bread in a reheated 325 degree oven for 40 minutes or until bread reaches an internal temperature of 200 degrees.

Mmmmm

I grew up eating my grandmother's Masa Sovada, but her's was nothing like yours; no vanilla, potatoes, or orange zest. No sugar sprinkled on top, either.

Haven't had it in a while. Think I might go dig out the recipe and make some. It's great toasted.

My mouth is watering even though I'm still stuffed from

Glorious and gorgeous and sinfully delicious--how I wish I had a slice or two for a bedtime snack.

Love the mixer drama as the Sunbeam whirs the dough into nougat filaments.

Kelly, I didn't know that you came back too. How wonderful!
