has anyone noticed that powders seem to be less and less and that liquids dominate ? I was in the new "Price Chopper" supermarket just 3/4 mile from my home and all they had was Tide in powder, thats it, period. No other brands were in powder but many in liquid ............ hope all are enjoying the quickly passing summer ...........
best,
gregm

That is painfully true here in Connecticut also. The grocery chains - Stop&Shop and Shaw's have Tide, Cheer, All and Gain powders. Sometimes Arm&Hammer. Otherwise all liquids. And to boot no one has Fab liquid anymore. The Fab powders are long gone here, but the liquids have just gradually disappeared. Actually, WalMart, Kmart and Target have almost no powders at all anymore. Unless some kind soul in the Midwest or Southwest starts sending us care packages, we're sunk or have to order from "bui it by the case.com" and pay ridiculous shipping charges.

I'd agree

around here I would guess 60-70% of the shelf space is now liquids. Tide pretty much dominates both but there is still some Sunlight and ABC powders. I think Gain only comes liquid. One thing though, where you can buy buckets and mega boxes of powders how can they reasonably expect to sell mega bottles of liquids. With a mega box/bucket of powder itjust sits on the floor and you scoop out what you need, hard to do that with a heavy bucket of a liquid. Tide does have their jerry can style with a tap on it but then you need a shelf or something to rest it on.

Comes down to profits...

P & G, Unilever, Colgate-Palmolive, and Church and Dwight are delighted to sell water at detergent prices.

I found Fab powder at my local dollar store.

If you want powders, you may have to make a side or special trip. The supermarkets around here have most of the P & G powders, but only in one or two sizes. The 80 load box of Arm and Hammer powder is not evidently sold here any more.

Most people I know who use the 300 ounce liquid Tide keep the bottle on top of the dryer, and slide it over to the washer. I wouldn't-hard on the dryer's enamel.

Interesting!

Here in the UK powders still have about 50% of shelf space, with the other 25% being tablets, and another 25% shared by liquids and liquitabs just about equally.

Jon :-)

Very interesting...we seem to have plenty of powders here!

In Port Aransas last year I saw...believe it or not...Oxydol! It was actually the most expensive detergent on the store shelves, so I went for Purex powder instead.

The wave of the future is right here.....The Midworst

Hardly any powders left here. Only Tide.It has been that way for a few years now. We have a great selection of liquids though.Bad news for you guys. Fort Wayne has been a test market for years. They try everything on us first! This is that way it will be all over at some point. BTW I can only find FAB at the Dollar General Stores here. They have FAB in liquid or powder form. FAB is a low sudser, and great to use for towels in ye olde belte drives. (:

Vanishing Powder

Hardly any powders at the walmarts I`ve been to. Some of the dollar stores still have some. No Gain original scent anywhere!

We have a joint around here called National Wholesale Liquidators that sells powder Canadian Tide in the "original" formula, meaning non-ultra. Almost bought some but read the box and it said it didn't contain phosphates.

There's something kind of charming, though, about Tide "avec un soupcon de Downy"!

Three brands in powder at Kroger in Fort Wayne

I just got back from Kroger, and they DO have a small amount of Gain,Tide, and Purex in powder form. There are small boxes, placed almost as an afterthought beside huge amounts of the same brands in the liquids. This is a huge Kroger store, and they carry Purex,Felds, huge amounts of Tide in every "flavor",All,Cheer,Arm&Hammer,Wisk, and a few odd brands, all in liquid form.

Same story here. Almost no powder detergents left. I did find Fab powder at the dollar store. Like others have said it is very low sudsing and works great in my front loader. Terry

I went looking around today here in Houston at several stores and poweders shared about 50% of the shelf with the liquids. Fab was available both as a liquid and a powder. But I noticed at my local Wal-Mart last week, the powders shelf space was on the decline.

Here it's just as Glenn described. Sears still has their buckets of powders, but the days of $9.99 sales are apparently gone.

I purposely did go to Dollar General and bought 4 boxes of Fab--two of each scent. I've just finished using box #1 tonight. I'll keep going to DG to get the Fab so they'll know someone wants powders. And they have Fab liquid too, but it's not low-sudsing.

Big decline in selection here for powders. Most stores have very little, I had to almost hunt for the section at Target the other day. I really miss the tablet detergent - Wisk tabs were the best! I'm really loving the tablet detergents that Mike sent over for the convention - all have been good performers with NO suds. The Dixan pellets that Louis brought are also fantastic - great cleaning, no suds and incredible clean, fresh fragrance!

Here is the tablet section from British Corner Shop - Daz and Persil are my favs, but they all are good performers.

Detergents here in Oz

Very interesting reading that you guys are having powders disappear slowly, down here there is still a pretty fair selection of both liquids and powders to choose from, however I must admit that powders in concentrated form do seem to be the norm now, personally though I buy my detergent from a little European Delicatessen near home who import Persil powder
and a brand I don;t know about called Dixan, perhaps anyone who knows this product could advise on how it works, but anyhow I like my Persil and would not buy anything else except for delicates of course in which I buy a product called Softly which has been around here for many years.
Cheers people.

At my local shop-rite it's the same story. Tons of liquid and only two powders which are Tide in it's many variations and Arm&Hammer.

The K-Mart i went to a couple of weeks ago had Ariel, Gain and Tide in powder. Would like to give the Ariel a try.

Yes the powders are quick becoming dinosaurs here.

The good thing is the liquids, other than really water, can't hide fillers like colored sawdust. (makes you have to buy softener!)

And the liquids "dissolve" much better than powders....

but the other day I wanted a box of blue Cheer powder and the stuff I was able to buy with that name on it was certainly not the Cheer I remember....

powders

seem to have retreated to places like Costco and Sam's Club where you buy huge buckets of it and scoop as needed.

Hi Steve

I used to use powdered Arm&Hammer in the previous WP. Good cleaner and cheap, but it was the combination of hard water and that particular detergent that eventually clogged the spin
basket holes with calcium deposits.

Very tedious job trying to remove the deposits which of course resulted in wetter than usual laundry. Maybe i did not use the proper dosages, i don't know, but i have never seen Tide do this, so i pay extra for the Tide.

I started using Calgon in the new machine, but as of late have not seen it on the shelves in my supermarket over here.

Anyhow, enough of this little rant and on to some Friday afternoon laundry. Nice way to finish up vacation ;).

Dixan

Pulsatron,

Dixan is made by Henkel, like the German Persil (there is also a British Persil, made by Lever). Dixan comes in powder, megaperls and gel (more or less clear and thick liquid). Dixan is a very good cleaning detergent, especially the megaperls (the pellets Greg mentions). What do you want to know about Dixan?

Here in West Texas, powders are disappearing as well. At our Wal-Mart stores, powders have only 1/8 of the shelf-space, whereas the liquids claim the remaining 7/8. What a shame. I tend to like powders, primarily because I feel like they clean better. I do use liquids occasionally, but I use my FL more than my TL, so liquids don’t work so well there.

Austin – We have Oxydol at our local United Supermarkets. I really LOVE the vintage Oxydol, so a few months back I bought a box of the new stuff. It really didn’t seem to work all that well in comparison to Tide. Furthermore, it didn’t have that classic 1980’s Oxydol smell, so I was very disappointed. I would love to find a couple of boxes of 1980’s Oxydol!

DADoES – I really like HEB. We don’t have those in my part of the state, but I went to one in Midland a couple weeks ago and found a GREAT selection of detergents. Especially Mexican brands.

Gansky1 – I recently purchased a batch of detergents from the UK as well. I really like Daz, Persil Bio Tablets (contains phosphate), Ariel Colour Tablets and Comfort FS. Here is another great site to purchase these products:

While we can still get a selection of powders here in Mini, I have noticed over the past year at Target and the major supermarket that the selections of powders are slowly diminishing. I'm worried that powders might disappear for good because liquids are terrible for vintage rubber. Of course I can continue to buy vintage detergent to use on eBay but it can be terribly expensive.

Greg I too am very impressed with the detergent tablets that Mike sent me from England. They seem to clean very well and leave no powdery residue with just a small amount of sudsing. Seems our products and policies in the US are not so slowly but surely falling behind the rest of the world.

Snowing powders in PA

I was at Weis today and saw a lot of powders: Tide, Ivory Snow, Gain, Bold, new Oxydol, Cheer, and Arm & Hammer. The Dollar Tree has Sun and Purex powders. Redner's has Xtra. I tried Fresh Start in 2001 when I found some at Big Lots, but I haven't seen it since.

I miss Fresh Start!

One of the great things I found when we moved here was that the Kahului Safeway carried Fresh Start. It was priced too high at $8.99, but if you waited for the sale (and we ALWAY wait for the sale on Maui-only a dumb tourist would pay full price!) it was $4.99.
Well, about 2 months ago, the Fresh Start dissappearred. Darn! I just thought it was a cool product and low suds for my hettie.
