Hello all, seems to me that many believe that those tiny top level downward sprays really help, especially in preventing "foo-foos" from landing afloat on the concaves of cups. What makes me question their validity is this. Unless the DW has a great filtering system, the little arm itself would belch particles forth from it.Besides that, their action is not exactly a tsunami. For example,as a child, from 1975 on,Sears showed their Three-Level Power Wash thru a see-thru tub in action,a D&M design by the way.You had the full-size counter rotating spray arms hurling water @ the rate of about 47 GPM up and all around, and this munchkinland sprinkler on top spraying downward @ 2.5 GPM.Parden me,but it looked like it was merely tinkling, and being drowned out by all the other action. What is the feedback from you all.Besides, when GE started this in 1957 on their bow-tie impeller macine, did it REALLY help?Would love the answers. Thanks, gang!

3rd Level wash

Some spin tube Frigidaires had this, too. Montgomery Ward machines had a different take on the idea. They had a little "cup" with grooves in it mounted in the ceiling, and a stream of water from the upper spray arm ala WP style, shot into it, and it spun and threw the water downward.

I imagine where it would come in hadny is when the upper rack has large bowls in it, and the water from the upper spray arm can't reach the top surfaces of the bowls or other large concave items.

top sprayer

I did notice that large bowls in the top rack of my '88 WP machine sometimes didn't cleaned on their top surface, especially if the whole rack was filled with bowls. Never had this problem with my old 78 KM machine with the top sprayer. So I guess it depends on the loading and items.

I've had 2 Frigidaire dishwashers in the past 5 years. My new machine (which has a baby spray arm mounted to the top of the tub, spraying downward) does a better job of cleaning the tops of cups, glasses and the back of soup ladles---things like that---than my old machine.

I think the downward-spraying mini arms are there more to rinse away particles from the tops of items in the top rack as opposed to actually doing any 'scrubbing'.

I have used a few different types of DW. 70's GE potscubber, 80's Kitchen Aid Superba and our current Frigidaire Gallery. with the KA we always seemd to have sand as we call it on the con-cave bottoms of glasses, The GE was the best for clean glasses and the Frigidaire is quite good at the bottom cleaning also. DW without the spay I think do tend to leave the gunk on the bottoms.
