Pre-boot laundromats and matching dryers

Hey fellas,

Mark and I were talking today about laundromats and I started wondering are there any pre-boot, 1940-1948, slant front laundromats in the club? If so, any pictures? Also, when did Westinghouse introduce it's slant front clothes dryer? Anybody have one thar would match the pre-boot slant fronts? Just curious.

Jerry Gay "Easyspindry" has one, I found it for him on Craigslist, We are going to try to get it going this spring.

One in family memory. Replaced with boot SF around 1957.

. . . I have one. And I think it's one of the first because there are two dials on the front, one for water temp and the other for the timer.

We plugged it in and it ran . . . even the dials lit up. But in a few seconds it started smoking. Hans panicked and unplugged it. I thought it was just dirt in the motor getting burned off since it has been sitting in an old tobacco barn for the past 50 years or so. There was evidence of a mouse house down inside the mechanism and a king snake living in there. I wish you could have seen Hans when that snake moved.

Anyway, we want to get it going as soon as we can both get together.

I've got pictures somewhere and, of course, can always take more.

For several years WH made a solid door dryer that would have matched the bootless Laundromats. My 8th grade teacher had one. Later, these solid door dryers had the black glass lens mounted on the dryer door so that it would match the Laundromats of the period.

 Did the post war bootless Laundromat have door safety switches on either one of the loading doors?

The one I have, model L-2, has no door switch.

How did this work anyway? Did the inner door rotate with the tub?

Same as the later boot version except the inner/second door had the latch and gasket. The outer door was a 'shelf', otherwise decorative. The works changed few principal components, primarily the early gearbox became a simpler/cheaper 3-belt with intermediate reduction pulley for tumble. Suspension largely unchanged: 2 side, 1 rear support coil; 2 upper, 2 side, 1 lower snubber leaf.
