So I have been working on this project for a little bit and wanted to share the results.  I've always liked the KD19 cycle series, but was not thrilled with the short main wash, and the hit/miss filter.  I acquired a KDS23 series and decided to convert it to a KDS19.  My hubby would only agree to let me put it in our new kitchen if it "blended" in!  Thus the updated control panel, handle, and buttons.  Additionally, because the main wash is so short (9 min), and modern detergents need time to work effectively, I added a 25 min time delay to the main wash.   I've tested it in my workshop and it works great.  I'll be installing it sometime this week.  I'll give a follow up report on how well it's cleaning in a couple of weeks.   Hope you enjoy the pics!

Very interesting!

Give us some details. It appears you're using the 19 control panel. How about the motor/pump? 19 or 23? If the 23, how is the filter cleaned without reversing the motor?

Specifics on the time delay are very welcomed, too.

KitchenAid

My family had a kds19 - it worked beautifully but cycle time was long for those days.
The drying performance wasnt that great unless you used jetdry.
Best of Luck with it!

Modified KDS 19 dishwasher

That looks really great, Alan. I love to modify things from time to time both an appearance and mainly in function. Glad I was able to help supply a part for this neat project. It would be neat to see picture of your kitchen with this installed in it.

When you really work with an appliance, you realize that all of them have serious faults in the design of them or things that don’t make them suitable and functional the way we would like them to work.

I’ve modified quite a few of my daily driver machines, I’ve said that I wanted to take an 806 Maytag washer and put the 50 cycle pulley and of course with the orbital transmission load sensor agitator, but then make it delay so the motor is pulled back so it would do a neutral drain, so it wouldn’t have the problems that Maytag usually have with balanceing and it would also allow a faster spin speed. I would also drill out all the holes in the basket, so it could get rid of lint and sand better and put a whirlpool style self cleaning lid filter in since there’s already a reversible pump.

I modified my 1971 Lady Kenmore washer many years ago. I put the super capacity tub in it and also got the spin speed up to 700 RPMs that made quite a difference with overall performance, as the spin speed was always the week factor on Whirlpool belt Drive full-size machines.

Wow that's great, Alan.  I'd love to see a photo showing the dishwasher and the surrounding kitchen.

I'd be very interested to hear more details about the wash delay too.  I have thought about doing the same thing to my KDS-18.  I was thinking of adding a relay that would detect when the power has been routed through the main wash detergent cup and then once the power has been removed from the bimetallic, the relay would then cut power to the timer motor for a certain length of time.  Would be really great to know how you did it.

Congrats,

Mark

Installed!!

Thank you for all the nice comments.  I installed it this afternoon and used it this evening!  Flawless!  Dishes clean, dry, & cool to the touch (a nice feature).  Although it was noisier than the tall tub it replaced, it was not by that much.

The machine was originally a 23 series.  I swapped out the controls, panels, wiring harness, etc. and created two additional circuits to make everything work.

To achieve the reversing drain mode I created a circuit consisting of 3 relays.  It is activated by the circuit for the drain valve.  When the timer calls for drain, the relay opens the circuit to the motor; simultaneously a time delay relay (#2) activates after 3 seconds, closing a circuit to a 3rd relay which switches the wash & drain contacts re-starting the motor in the drain direction.  The timed relay now runs for 77 seconds fully draining the machine.  After this time elapses the timed relay opens, breaking the circuit to the contact switching relay (#3), stopping the motor.  A few seconds later the dishwasher timer moves to the next increment, the drain valve circuit opens, and the motor re-starts in the wash direction.  Luckily the KDS19 timers have 90 second increments and the drain increment is the full time (unlike the KDS 17).

To achieve the main wash delay I created a second circuit with a simple relay combined with another time delay relay.  It is triggered by the Wash light.  When the wash light circuit closes it activates the 1st relay which splits the power in two directions.  The first direction is back to the Wash light to energize it.  The second direction is to the time delay relay. I wired the timer motor through this relay.  When this relay is energized it delays opening the timer motor circuit for 4:45; after that elapses the relay opens the timer motor circuit for 20 min.  The 4:45 delay is required to be sure the timer has moved past the point where the detergent cup bi-metal is de-energized.  The water heater is activated during the main wash and this delay gets the water to about 145-147 degrees.  It provides a total wash time of 29 minutes in the Normal cycle, and 24 minutes in the Light cycle and the Fast Wash/No Dry cycle (but there is still no pre-wash or last rinse heating period in that cycle).

Here are pics of the relay circuits and of the machine installed.  I didn't get a before & after picture of tonight's load, but it was a medium soiled load.  The Light Wash cycle did the job in about 1.5 hours (the first water heating takes more time in this machine since it only has a 950 watt element).  But the heating time helps loosen food debris due the hot, humid environment that is created during the heating time.

The first 2 pics are of the drain circuit.  The 3rd pic is of the wash delay circuit.  The remaining pics are of it installed (& some operating).  I'm happy with the paint match to my cabinetry; I got it pretty close!  :)   I am truly psyched to have this installed; it has been a pet project for some time now.  I love this conversion!!  I hope you enjoy the pics.

Hi everyone, wanted to provide a quick update. Have run several loads now, and the machine has worked beautifully! Here are some pics of a fairly heavy load (not quite a Bob load). Used the Normal cycle, and one pod of Kirkland detergent (our water is so soft that Kirkland works very well). Everything came out perfectly clean! Here are some pics.
