Hey folks,

Do any of you use pressure cookers? I have an old one that I'm in the process of replacing.

Investigating the market here in the USA, I note that Presto and Mirror have shifted their production to China. Since I don't buy China products for food stuff (and try to avoid using them at all) I've ordered a Fissler from Germany from Amazon.com. Expensive, yes, but adjusted for inflation it is NOT that much more expensive than m 6 quart Presto that was US made that I bought in 1986. (It was $260, which made me blanch, but I paid $120 for my Presto --- and this Fissler is a 10 litre!)

The other one was a Kuhn Rikon - but I note that they will "soon" have a 5 litre on amazon.com for $100 or so - which tells me they, too, are shifting their production to China.

So does anyone know anything about Fissler?

Bialetti in the USA

I just bought a new pressure cooker for myself after years of experience at my mother's with her. The brand from Bialetti is Aeternum and they all come with a 25 years complete warranty.
I bought a 7 litres model with interlock that prevents opening of the lid if there is pressure and 2 relief valves, so it is fool-proof! My pan came with a defect and it was replaced for free in 5 days, I just called the free-phone and they sent out a replacement. Plus it is made in Italy! :D Let's be proud of it! ;) I'm very satisfied of the performances!

I'm also attaching a photo for you to see: in the first pan the bottom deformed and I ordered a substitute under warranty.

Stupid me!

I mis-read your post and gave you a suggestion! Can I blame on me being bad at English? Ahaha, sorry about my overlooking! :S

Presto !!!

I have my Grandmother's Presto.
According to the Presto reps in Eau Claire Wisconsin, they told me tha it is one of first series they made.

I e-mailed them pictures and they couldn't believe I had one.

The pressure Regulator is Bi-Metal. I sprayed it with WD-40 for a week like they told me and the Sealing rings are still available at True Value Hardware and Ace.

The pic is from before I cleaned it up with Brillo.

Did a Water Test... Just like the day she got it. I use it 4-5 times a week.

Should the regulator fail, you can replace it with the Rocking type.

If you can find an Older One, the parts are still available.

I saw an old Presto similar to that one at the thrift store recently, but of course it was missing the regulator. I passed since I have a Presto I bought a few years ago. I like the Presto, and part of my decision to go with that make was the easy availability of parts, like at ACE Hardware, etc. My 40-year old Mirro is fine, it's only a 4 quart and I wanted a bigger one, and I couldn't find parts for it except on line. Now I see where my favorite ACE is carrying more Mirro stuff, so I'm in good shape for both of my cookers.

I really like pressure cookers. They are efficient and fast.

Can't cook without one!!!

I have about 40 old pressure cookers and buy all the gaskets I can find, usually I use a 1947 Mirro Matic or a 57 Presto,I have a stainless steel copper bottom Presto from the early 50s,to me you cant beat one for beef stew, stewing chicken, boiling potatoes for mashing...8 minutes beats 30 anyday, If fixing very thick pork chops ,I always brown them well, then put them on a rack in the pressure cooker and pressure steam them for 15 min or so,you can cut them with a fork..

Pressure cooker!

I was thinking of buying a electric pressure cooker. The one I was thinking about was the living well that Montel Williams promotes from a infomercial. Does anyone have a openion about it.
Jim how is the farberware PC work - can you put in dishwasher?
I'm used to the stovetop PC, but if the electric would be better I would be open to buying it.
Thanks,
Peter

I have the Fagor, from theeee bay, if you web search pressure cooking time chart, you go to their website. alright i will fess up i can't find the book for it. The Fagor is all about cooking at a higher steam pressure. It works very well. Even the new presto's are like the Fagor tall and narrow, where the old presto's and mirro's were larger diameter and squatty. It makes a big difference when browning a chuck roast or making stuffed green peppers. alr2903

is that a electric - cause I have a stove top model from fagor. It's ok but I want something better so I was wondering if electric is the way to go

Peteski, yes it's a stove top. I don't think Fagor makes an electric. CU used to write that the electric presto's took longer to come up to pressure than the stove top versions, but today's PC's are much different animals. I have never owned an electric. alr2903

My two Prestos

are both electrics, from the same time period...late 60s-early 70s. One was Ma's, and one was a gift from Kelly, my Secret Santa.

They are the only ones I've used, and I love them a lot.

I highly endorse Lorna Sass's Pressure Perfect as an excellent pressure cooker cookbook. (I've looked at the others, and go back to Pressure Perfect.) Well written, and handy reference charts.

I make chili in mine frequently. Use sausage instead of ground beef. Adds a nice level of flavour.

Toploader 55 and I have similar cookers His I think he once told me was a little older than mine. Mine was a gift to my parents in 1947 when the married. It has cooked all these years. I will use it tonight to make beef stroganoff. They are a great way to cook meats. Happy cooking Dano

Since we are on the pressure cooker topic I was wondering how you prepare spare ribs in the pressure cooker. I bought a 5 lb slab at the slaughter house today and wanted to fix them in the pressure cooker tomorrow.

My pressure cooker is a 5 qt Cooks Essentials digital pressure cooker, I got it from QVC last Christmas. It has a removable teflon cooking well that is dishwasher safe, mine is also able to be used as a slow cooker which is nice that it can do double duty.

I have one of them, too -- I use it for canning. (It's 22 quart!).

The Fissler is cool - I'm still trying to learn how to adjust the heat properly. I seem constantly to be making it hiss - these don't. (However, I'm also trying to figure out if I'm seeing all of 'the second ring' which is what you see when cooking on high). It's slightly more confusing then the prestos that I've used in the past.

The electric pressure cookers look fascinating!

Peter > It looks similar to my Faberware. Mine is non stick and goes right in the dishwasher. I use mine at least once a week.

peteski, you definately mentioned a Fagor quirk, and its easy to scorch, i scorched the bottom of it several times in our old house with electric. It seems to work better with the gas stove we have now. Spankomatic thats a nice cooker. Also on flea bay search for wolfgang Puck. alr2903

Pressure cooker!

I did manage to get the burnt stuff off the pressure cooker! I do have a gas stove.
I'm debating I may order the electric pressure cooker.
