Pretty in pink

I just got this pink Maytag set, over the weekend. I was told they are from 61. The dryer works. I haven't tested the washer yet.

Nice looking set! I saw so many of these around farm country over the years growing up. My grandmother had a two speed version of the washer. Yours was certainly well used, don't often see the basket that worn away, but that's easily remedied. Have fun with them, color in a Highlander is kind of rare. Good luck!

I have the model below this with just the hot warm and cold selector buttons. It was as little as Maytag offered in an automatic, but it was in very good condition. It sits next to the A806. After the motor went out, Jeff installed a two speed motor and put a toggle switch on the back of the control panel. Mine has the original dark blue porcelain tub. The machine originally had a narrow post Gyrator.  I run a black polypropylene power fin agitator in it with the stainless steel lint filter and fabric softener dispenser without the black plastic cup. Once agitation starts I pour the measured bleach down through the softener dispenser followed by a pint of hot water for safe bleach dispensing.

Turquoise is my favorite color but I love any of the rounded control Maytags with the gray dial.  My great-grandmother had a white one, not sure of the model but I know it had rounded corners and a dark dial, not like my mother's with the white dial and square corners.

Nice looking sets. The tub looks more like chemical damage than wear. I know if you put baking soda and some other powders too, as additives, it will attack the porcelain enamel on tubs. At the shirt laundry we used "sour", which eliminated the soap content in the rinse and that destroyed the porcelain on the tubs of washers too. I learned that by experience unfortunately. It made a washer tub like sandpaper first and then it removed the porcelain to the point of rusty metal underneath.[this post was last edited: 9/14/2017-11:57]

Is using BORAX powder in your laundry the same thing as the "sour" that you used to use, that wore down the tub's finish? Please get back to me & let me know.

Borax is alkaline just like baking soda is alkaline, sour is acidic.  I used to add borax to my pool to bring the ph up.  The pH of borax is 9.3 and baking soda is 8.4.  Ammonia is about 12 and lye is 13 to 14 while Clorox is around 12.2.  Neutral pure water is 7.  The acidity of laundry sour cancels the alkalinity of borax, lye, baking soda, bleach, and other substances in detergents and helps bring the pH back to the neutral 7 level.  I know some Clorox splashed on the top of my mother's Maytag and it went unnoticed...it etched the porcelain...but this was pure bleach.

What's the story on these? Were they a Craigslist find? A little old lady owned them?

They were a friend of a friend. My friend knew the owner for a long time. The owner has them for a number of years. He currently has cancer and isn't expected to last much longer. He's been selling stuff off. My friend told me about them and hot me first dibs on them. The owner was in the hospital when I picked them up from his house. They were in the backyard under the patio. Had been for a while, by the looks of it. The owner is an older gentleman. Don't know more about him.

Update on the washer. I ended up testing it out. The drain hose is shot, no big deal. However, the motor on it is not working. I can hear it hum, but it won't spin. I'm not sure if it is the starting windings or the whole thing.

It may just be stuck?? I got a free GE washer a few years back. The person who had posted on CL stated it needed a new belt. I soon realized after getting home the motor was stuck. I removed and lightly clamped vertically by the shaft in the bench vise. Just a slight twist on the housing and it broke loose. It wasn't stuck that badly but just enough that it couldn't break itself loose. Put it back in and it operated without issue.
