Thread replies are numbered sequentially, counting only the replies you can see. So if a participant in a thread is blocked by you and not by me, then we won't see the same reply numbers. Same if a participant is blocked by me and not by you. But we will both see the same date & time in replies, so IMO it's better to refer to replies by date & time.

Jay, thank you for the observation. For the reason(s) cited, I grugingly decided to not hide individual(S) so the post numbers are consistent.
I'm occasionally surprised at the number of posts that some threads differ from what I see. For me it's well worth not seeing garbage posts from a couple of people.
Post number is another way to identify a reply, but providing the date and time makes it easier. I'm willing to deal with the issue of reply numbers that don't match what I see in exchange for the ongoing relief that the hide option affords.
One can do a browser Ctrl-F "find in page" search (after displaying the entire thread) for a Post# to find a quoted/referenced reply in a given thread.
