Yes the motor should be interesting, we have yet to try it out. Both of us are still so gobsmacked we managed to get it that we both still have to pinch ourselves to make sure its real. We both also cant believe it still that we aint even plugged her in. Weird aint it?!!!

GARY and MIKE - Paul will add later with its story and work done to it as he has it at his place for the past 5 weeks and it only just recently came to Crewe so god knows what hes been up to with it lol.

NickUK - thanks, to say again its really a dream come true but saying that it just goes to show if you put in hard work and determination what you want will eventually come your way. Things really are outthere and its up to you to find them.

SIMON - cheers mate, we will skip the attempt at removing the discoloration for now until another drawer cover makes itself known as we dont want to risk detroying it completely but thanks for the info though we really do appreciate it ~ another member mentioned use of Ambisol boat fluid to restore the whiteness but until we wish to risk it I think its best to leave well alone.

MIKELONDON - Welcome to the group. Yes they were fab machines, Certainly a style statement that funnily has come back around in fashion.

IRISHMARK - Oh dear we all learn by mistakes. I let an 1848 go in the early days of collecting. This has certainly made up for it though.

LEE -- Just enjoy the show. Pictures always speak more than words.

KEITH - No you probably are cracking up LOL. No knowledge of 5 button Automatics, even service manuals dont mention one.

Crumbs I think I must be really going mad...lol (but i am going back 30years)..the tumble dryer she had was a 1701, as i still have the instruction booklet.

..next question..was there a "Spray" symbol on the dial for the washer for a 1701 tumble...?? I seem to rememeber that on mum's.. and they would have been bought together. Or am I totally losing it..LOL

weird motors

Hi,congratulations on your new find and looks all original too ,even a black door boot.Does it have the E.M.D. motor,which is realy noisy .Made by electric motor developments of essex.Used by hotpoint for a short while identified by only having 1 field coil and rather minimalist skeletal apearance.As for the kickstip i dont think they had one and is just same textured charcoal grey paint as the rest of the chasis.As for the colour shading of the option buttons am i right in thinking it coresponds to colour shading on the programe dial as to which option can be used with that particular programe.Anyway great save cant wait to hear it on spin ,they can keep their super silent shh Hotponts.yawn,Regards Nige.

It seems like a long time since I last saw the both of you at Mike's last wash-in! Congratulations on acquiring that lovely hottie, I'm sure you're both over the moon. Will the both of you be planning a wash-in any time in the future as I would love to take a closer look at all those hotpoints?? Lol

As for the yellow soap draw, you could try using a plastic colour restorer called Polytrol!

Nige, I have yet to inspect the insides myself but from what I gather it may be an EMD - Paul seems to think the brushes screw in?

Yes you are right about the dial colours prompting you to select certain options.

Keith, I suspect your mums Liberator was a later one. The words were replaced with symbols on the later ones.

How the devil are you? All well here as you can tell. Polytrol - thats it (Dunno where i got Ambersill from) I remember now it was you at Mikes last do that told us about it. Been racking my brains as to whom id heard it from.

Will certainly let you know if there are any developments in allowing a wash in at my place as soon as they happen.

Hi all.

Many thanks for the comments and yep, it is truely nice to finally have a bit of front loading, wet Amethyst (the official name of the shade of purple) in the fold.

When I went to collect the 1828/02, it was a good few minutes before I even touched it! I just stood and stared in awe as to what was in front of me. After a while, a gentle fingertip touch confirmed that there was a Hotpoint Liberator in front of me and that it wasnt a figment of my imagination.

What made it all the more special is that the 1828/02 was the very model that lived next door to me, when I was a kid.
Uncle Bob even tape recorded his machine and presented me with the cassette, so I could put a tape recorder in the many box machines that I used to make and have full sound effects.

The last time I saw that machine (and any wet front loading GEC Liberator) was around 1987.
About six months ago, 23 years after last seeing it, I asked Uncle Bob whether he still had their machine. After a couple of minutes of confusion and remembering, the answer came back 'no':-( and that it they had had their current machine (a Bosch) for around 15 years.

The last known location of a 'piece of purple' was gone and the trail was cold fill only:-(

Then I gets a text message whilst at work and, after a week or so, went to collect a 1828/02!

Hi Keith.

Just to confirm that, to the best of my knowledge, there was never a 5 button fron loading Liberator.

The Liberator fleet was made up of, in order of introduction:

1973...
1850 - 4 button de luxe
(there was to be a single button, cold fill model in the form of the 1840, but this was never built)

1974...
1851 - 4 button de luxe, with interlock

1975...
1851/03 - 4 button de luxe, with fabric conditioner compartment and associated changes to the internal plumbing

1976...
1823 - cold fill Zanussi, with no option buttons
1826 - hot and cold Zanussi, with two option buttons
1828/01 - 4 button de luxe (pre production)
1828/02 - 4 button de luxe (production machines)

1828/03, 1828/04, 1828/05 & 1828/06 were Morphy Richards, GALA, GEC Australia and Export versions (cant remember the order though)

1978...when the shower and swirly spin symbols were introduced
1824/01 - 2 button 800rpm only
1828/07 - 4 button de luxe 800/400rpm
1848/01 - 4 button super de luxe with 1000to400 variable spin

1979...saw the introduction of the clear door machines
18340 2 button standard
18380 4 button de luxe
18580 variable

With your mums machine having the shower symbol it would be from the 1978 series and, with it not being variable and having more than two buttons, I reckon it would have been a 1828/07. Piccy below...

Good to hear from you. Believe me , not being able to plug and play is mighty frustrating - neither myself or Rob have actually been able to do either of these things woth the 1828/02 yet! grrrrrr.

I was mighty pi$$ed off not to have won the £113million lottery recently, as it would have come in very useful in getting a garage with electric and a water supply! complaint letter to Camelot was sent last week enquiring as to why I hadnt won, but dont expect a response. still, I have made my disappointment known and hopefully they will make amends in the near future. Wont hold my breath though.

If you are north of brum of a weekend and passing Crewe, let either of us know and we will gladly introduce you to the wall of Hotpoint, on one side, and Hoover, Creda, Ariston, Colston, Servis, Bendix, Electra and Zanussi on the other.

This has jogged the grey mater, the liberator I had was fitted with a motor with screw in brushes I’m sure of it now, when you first posted this thread I thought dose it have screw in brushes but convinced myself that, that cant be right they all had the spring clip push in type.
 
There has been some interest in the liberator deluxe that im selling,just to reiterate as i am saying in my replies at the moment i am taking offers and will sell to the highest offer.

Hi Lee.

No - your brain isn't playing games with you.

The motor in our 1828/02 also has screw in brushes, which is a abit of an inconvenience as to replace them you have to remiove the motor from the machine. Piccy attached below...

Absolutely a special edition!
I have a rough idea that it will find its way upto my parents, to have the kickstrip resprayed and might just have to plumb it in by the garage door, in such a way as to let next door see it. See if it jogs their memories a bit.

All is fine - just knackered from running round like a blue arsed fly and perpetually worrying about not having enough room for stuff. You know how it is. lol.

Still not had chance to play with that 2 tonne AEG yet?

Hi Tom and Matt.

Matt - you mentioned the woolmark sticker - i dont ever remember seeing them stuck on the later 18-series machines! Does anyone have any memories of the silver and browns carrying this appendidge?
I've just been back and looked at all the pics of 18's and, barring the Liberators, not a woolmark sticker to be seen.

Tom - the frustration of not being able to plug and plumb it in is getting tiresome. If we cant get the machine to my parents soon, then dont be surprised to see two blokes wheeling an 1828/02 through your store! lol.
