Can anyone advise what brand of comfortable high backed reclining chair to buy for my comp desk? I was buying those cheap $40.00 Walmart ones and would get a year out of them before the plywood frame would break inside and they would lose back support. Then I switched to a $150.00 Amazon high backed one and figured it would be much better quality. A year later the cheap thin plywood backing inside this one is shot and the cushions flat. Same junk as the Walmart but $100.00 more. I want something with quality cushions and back support plus high enough to recline in as sometimes I catch a few winks at the comp

Ditto on the Steelcase

I had the same issue as you spending in the $150 range at Sam's, etc. After a year or so they start falling apart and loose their support. I am home based so I am sitting on it all day and I need one that will hold up.

I bought a Steelcase a few years ago, not sure exactly how many, and it's just like it was the first day. They are not cheap but well worth every penny. All kinds of adjustments including lumbar. Really happy with mine. This is definitely a case of you get what you pay for.

Funny you posted this as I've been thinking about this topic.

I got a new chair at work about a year ago but I cannot tell what brand it is. It's comfortable and holds up well.

I don't recommend the Serta ones. They feel comfortable but they don't hold up. We got some of those about 5 or 6 years ago and they all lean now and make lots of noises. Not very good considering they costed about $300 a piece!

Here at home I have one I got from Office Depot probably way back in 2004 or so. It still sits fine, but the leather on the bottom has been torn up for years. I just put a cushion over it, because I feel like if I replace it, it'll end up being the same way in a few years.

Good to know...

having had the same issues from multiple POS computer chairs from Staples, we're now on our 3rd one which is starting to lean and requires several extra cushions for back support. We have a small Steelcase 5 roller office chair with no arms like those used in secretarial offices 40 yrs ago and it's still in perfect condition, but it's not suitable for high-hour usage in front of a computer. Will check out Steelcase chairs and report.

A couple of options: any of the high-end office manufacturers have good equipment--Herman Miller/Steelcase/Iron Horse/... There's a Herman Miller outlet in Zeeland, MI (about 20 minutes from Saugatuck...) which has good stuff and is a blast to look through...check with your local high-end office distributor who may have cast-off chairs that you can get for much less.

I've had good experience with office chairs from Costco/Costco Business. In fact, I have two: one for winter, one for summer. The winter one is cushioned with a high back and relatively warm. The summer one has a breathing mesh surface that is ideal for warm temps, and is lower back. Both have multiple adjustments and are on sturdy metal five spoke roller bases.

At the transmitter plant shift supers office they have a Lazy-Boy office chair that has held up for the past 4 yrs.Other chairs have been the Aeron ones-they hold up well except when the seat material starts to tear. Then the chair can't be repaired. When the place here had te Aeron chairs if one had a problem the Aeron guy fixed it or replaced the chair.

I've just started looking for an office chair for my 36" table which is now my desk.

1 friend recommended both Herman Miller and Aeron...... but the prices....ouch!

If you work in it,

don't be stingy about the cost! Buy a good one once and be done. Your back is your liveliehood.
You may see some new tax reform going forward too, that may restore some home office deductions without itemizing. We lost that, along with minimal charity deductions with the 2018 reform comencing for the 2019 tax year.
Joe doesn't recall the brand of his, but it's the type with the skeltal frame, and netted rubber cusion and back rest. I think it was about $800. There may be less expensive models now. He also has a rising monitor/keyboard desk platform, so he can stand up and work. Our son has got one last year after he was told to work from home. It was about a grand.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Been looking at lots but I cant do the mesh style with no or small arm rests. I need thick cushions and padding or I'm not comfortable. Looked at a Steelcase one and gasped when I saw the $1900.00 price! If I cant find something on Marketplace I may try a used office furniture place although I did look into one last year and they wanted big bucks for expensive looking chairs that upon closer inspection were simulated wood on plastic and most likely came from the same child labor shop my Wal Mart chair did. I dont mind going for $400.00 on a good used top of the line chair like new. Been wondering if a gaming chair is the way to go instead??

No experience with the gaming chairs, they look intriguing.

About 15 years ago, I went to a used office furniture store and bought several high-end, rolling office chairs. All had removable arms, were heavy and solidly built. I came across a couple of Herman Miller Aeron chairs during an office move out that were marked "trash". Took them to the HM dealer and had the lift mech. repaired for ~$60 each and they've been favorites ever since. My mom got one for her sewing room, used every day and have had no troubles. Mine is used less but still the most comfortable and trouble free of all I've had.

My chair at work is a low cost Herman Miller Equis line. Used daily for over 10 years now, still has a year and a half on the factory warranty.

I watch Aeron chairs on Marketplace and Craigslist. You can often find businesses that have a number of them for sale used, often lightly, for $250-400.

Whatever you get find a set of these Rollerblade style Polyurethane wheels. They actually have 4 sealed ball bearing races in them. S-M-O-O-T-H is the word
