Speed Queen portable dishwasher

Yes, of course it is a D&M dishwasher 100%. It was one of about 100 variations of machines that were sold under the D & M name.

It would be a 1970s machine the last four digits of the serial number is probably the build date code like all D& M dishwashers from the 70s. It was a terrible machine from a reliability standpoint and average performing machine, but definitely prone to water leaks.

Speed Queen and modern maid were both owned by McCraw Edison in this time. And modern maid was selling ranges that incorporated a dishwasher built by D & M and for whatever reason they decided to market some of these same appliances under the Speed Queen name back in the 70s I've never even seen a Speed Queen dishwasher.

So it's definitely a rare machine, but not something I would even bother collecting but somebody that wants unusual dishwasher should probably grab it.

I'm curious as to why a quality brand like Speed Queen would source a less-than-mediocre performing dishwasher from D&M. Did D&M ever make a dishwasher with a food particle filtering system?

Speed Queen dishwasher

Reply number six, that's a good question why that was ever sold under the Speed Queen name I doubt they sold very many because they really didn't have a full line of appliances anyway.

The last of the DNM dishwashers in the mid 80s did have a particle separation chamber system It was kind of a cheap version of whirlpool's power clean. I only saw it on Kenmore dishwashers, but it might've also been put on some other ones I don't think many companies were buying dishwashers from DNM toward the end.

John, didn't some honcho in Greenbelt like the mayor or someone have a SQ dishwasher back when I lived there? It was something I had never heard of. The dishwasher in the photo looks a lot like the 70s Norge in a friend's kitchen except his racks were yellow. One thing I liked about D&M dishwashers was the Hi Temp washing option. It did help improve the washing.

That looked like the interior of Norge dishwashers taht were installed in a new large apartment complex in more southern Austin from like 1973 to 1977. Same color racks too.

Well didn't one ask in the Deluxe Forum that if Speed Queen made a dishwasher if anyone would buy?

Surely this must give us an example and why the entire idea did not take off very long or why not many are out there, but at least with the numerous ranges made by McGraw/Edison that there are plenty of those branded as Modern Maid...

"I'm curious as to why a quality brand like Speed Queen would source a less-than-mediocre performing dishwasher from D&M."

Who else was willing to do private label dishwashers for SQ then?

Sears had Whirlpool on lockdown. Maytag didn't launch dishwashers until 1960 IIRC, and they had their own problems initially. Hobart (KitchenAid) had no need of doing private label for SQ.

Design and Manufacturing (D&M) at one time made nearly 40% of dishwashers sold worldwide. We all may have various quibbles about D&M dishwashers now, but if you were SQ looking for a private label dishwasher to slap your brand name upon D&M likely was one of best options.

IIRC at one time in major appliance history post WWII when there was push from dealers and or customers to have entire line of things from one manufacturer.

Be it a developer fitting out number of new homes or apartments or a housewife/couple fitting out a new home or redecorating; a dealer being able to offer a range of major appliances from one manufacture (which often carried same design theme) was something often desired. Imagine this was further emphasized by 1960's into 1970's when appliances were being offered in range "earth tone" or other shades.

Harvest gold from Maytag might not match something from General Electric who in turn was different than Sears/Kenmore...

So at one time then, Modern Maid/Speed Queen was just a Maytag which just didn't yet build refrigerators and freezers...

Had a childhood friend who's family were "Norge-Nuts", having a Norge top freezer fridge and even a dishwasher, portable but plumbed-in, both in avocado green... And a white single-door Norge fridge ion the basement...

In the basement were a harvest gold Mont. Ward Sig. harvest gold washer & gas dryer made by Norge which got later discarded years later by the family which moved in after...

However a no-name electric cooktop and Frigidaire French-door wall-oven both in stainless steel were the cooking units, and there might have also been a Nutone range hood over the "countertop stove"...
