Question about a Maytag A412 -"Clank" Clank "clank, not off balence

Yes, I can't believe it myself. My mother's 23 year old Maytag is making new noises from time to time, however, this little noise has me concerned.When it is agitating, you will hear clank clank clank clank, clank , and then it is faint, ect. It drains very slow, although getting the job done. What do you think may be causing this?

Probably the brake package starting to slip a little. Is the tub indexing during agitation? Sometimes a worn transmission belt will cause knocking too. Belt original?

I had a few machines that I installed a new brake package on and it still knocked a little, even with tighter lug adjustments. I found that applying thick grease (I use wheel bearing grease for boat trailers) to the splines would quiet it all the way down.

It drains very slow, although getting the job done.

Tub coming up to speed like it should? Remove the pump belt and turn the pump pulley by hand. It should turn super smooth with little effort. The pump bearing may need a shot of turbine oil if it's stiff or hangs up in certain positions.

As always, there could be a clog between the outer tub and the drain pipe. Socks are known to make their way in those places, although it has never happened to me or my family with over 60 years of combined use.

Check the motor pulley and see if the lower part that drives the pump belt is coming loose. For a period of time MT used a cheaper to make stamped pump drive pulley if its loose just replace the pulley assembly. There are many other possibilities for the problems you describe but its probably not that serious.
