I would like to hear what members have to say about the benefits, if any, to using Borax as a additive in laundry. If there is a benefit for achieving cleaner brighter results, is this going to hurt my machine? (Maytag E2L)

Borax

Hey---this might help with info, but I'm also gonna watch this thread for other folks input. I haven't tried Borax yet in laundry, but I've added it lately to the dishwasher, about 1/2 of the detergent cup for main wash and fill the rest with Cascade, and I also switched from always on the heated wash, pot-pan cycle to normal, and I am getting excellent results. So it's less soap, less energy used to heat from 140 (tank) to 180 (Sani-Cycle) and shorter wash cycle overall, exact same results as before with 2 detergent cups of Cascade, tons of energy to keep the Sani-temp hot, 45 minute overall cycle. Yes, I will soon try it out in the laundry, I like it so far, and I'll also check here for other comments.

On A Different Note

Scrubbing out my bathtub and bathroom sink with Borax and a VERY SMALL amount of Comet/Ajax (for disinfecting purposes) gets them both really clean, and reduces the amount of grit I have if I used only cleanser.

We've used Borax before to wash really dirty clothing and our dog beds.
Doggy odor is hard to get out of fabrics. Borax will get it completely out of the dog bedding. I did notice that after using it, you'll have a layer of scum on top of the wash water. This can stick to the sides or your washers tub. It's like a dark gray line at the water level. It'll rinse out of the clothes but is more difficult to get off the laundry tub. I use straight ammonia on a microfiber cloth and a little bit of elbow grease to get rid of it. Then I run a rinse only cycle to get rid of the ammonia.
