All you need is wire mesh with a diameter smaller than the wave itself. Then, when the waves try to pass through, they're basically converted to electricity and bled off.
That's the screen you see that makes the glass door on the oven possible. Remove that, and you'll nuke whatever's in front of the oven, too.

Remember those horror stories of people attempting to dry small animals and pets (even their gerbils!) in there?
Ida know, when I got my first nuker in 1982 it came with a dozen warning posted prominently. Let's just suppose you got past those-- why would you put anything that has an anus where your food goes?

I have a newer Panasonic, maybe 6 or 8 years old, and its the best I've owned. It has automatic functions for things like frozen dinners, frozen veg, auto reheat, and gosh darn it truly is automatic and does everything right.
Generally speaking, I like Panasonic stuff. I have a DVD player, a VCR, a camera, and a 40 yo tabletop cabinet radio that was my dads. I'm not in a rush for a plasma TV, but when I get one I'm sure I'll look at Panasonic first.
It's a shame they don't make window a/c's anymore. I have heard online that they were good, and quiet.

Jeff, if you continue to use it, just unplug it before you leave for an extended time. Our older panasonic started greeting us with a beep beep beep, when we would return home. This was right after a member of this forum posted re: the dishwasher that turned the heating element on. We still have it downstairs for an extra, but i would be distrustful of leaving it plugged in. For sure, the new ones are lightweight and feel flimsy.
