Question for the experts?

Hi everyone, I am currently trying to restore a '60 Frigidaire multi-matic washer but having a problem i can't quite figure out. The problem is this: During agitation the tub will start to spin causing the agitation to slow down. If i hold the tub still agitation is good. The weird part is if the tub is dry (without water or clothes) it doesn't spin and will agitate normally but put water or any kind of weight in the tub and it will spin during agitation. The mechanism has been taken completely apart and had new clutch and brake torgue springs installed.......anyone have an idea what I could look or adjustments that can be make to correct the situation? Thanks guys (and gals) for any suggestions you can offer.......

I don't remember if the Multimatic has this......

but I'm looking at the Repair Master for the Unimatic and Pulsamatic, did you check the trip shaft lever spring?

It doesn't sound like the brake shoes are engaging the sides of the transmission housing properly and are allowing it to turn. You can also check to make sure the springs are properly seating themselves.

(There isn't a trip-lever on the multimatic - that's a unimatic. That repair master gets a little too blended trying to cover both mechanisms in the same book.)

Mark make sure the upper mechanism nut is properly tightened and also check the brake tension clips...

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions.......I have the repair manual for the unimatic and pulsamatic, gansky you are right about it being "blended" a little too much. It gets kind of confusing. I will take it apart again to check to see if the springs are seated correctly. Is it possible to install the springs backwards or does it matter which way they get installed? By looking at the springs it doesn't appear that it would make any difference. I think the decelerator shoes are engaging because the agitator doesn't "jump" up and down at the end of the spin cycle. Am i correct in assuming that the decelerator shoes are to keep the agitator from going up and down at the end of the spin cycle? or does the entire brake assembly have an effect on this also? Thanks again for the suggestions guys..

Thanks Robert, when i take it apart again i will check the brake assembly clips to see if they are loose or out of place.
One thing that has me puzzled......is the pulsamatic and multimatic mechanisms one in the same? If not what would be the difference in the two?

Kinda, they are similar, the Multimatic uses two pulleys and has a different agitation stroke length.

I think i have found the problem. In the attached picture you will see the brake assembly from when i took the mechanism apart yesterday. There are 4 metal tabs on the brake plate that fit into a metal ring attached to the brake cup. (the brake plate is sandwiched between 2 brake discs and held together with 6 metal tension clips) With all 4 of these tabs broken off it was allowing the brake cup to spin freely and since the brake plate wasn't attached to anything there would be no braking action. So i'm hoping that when i get everything re-assembled it will work correctly. I almost have everything re-assembled and will hopefully get to put it to the test in the next couple of days. Will let you all know how it goes.......I am really getting excited to get another "vintage" machine up and running. Once all the mechanicals are taken care off i can get it painted and set it in place with the other 2 Frigidaire i have.

Well i finally got the multimatic back together (after multiple times taking it apart) I may be slow but when i put my mind to it can usually figure things out.....thanks everyone for the suggestions......I have attached a link to a video of the multimatic in agitation and spin......Check it out......

Thanks gansky.........you bet i'm excited as hell to get this machine up and going....Hope to have some pictures of the up-coming "Virgin" wash posted soon........still have to "Create" a gasket for the pump and finish getting everything back together before the "maiden' wash.......Hopefully in the next couple of days.....Thanks for the support!!!! You don't have any idea how hard this was to type without any errors after "several" jack and cokes........lol It's been a good weekend!!!
