Quick and easy vintage spaghetti recipe!

I have to admit I've been one of those evil people who has been known to break spaghetti in half. At one time, I'd have died first. But living alone all these years has resulted in increasing laziness.

Although I now often use some sort of smaller pasta.

On breaking spaghetti: It's difficult to explain why Italians (my mom was from Veroli) are so vehemently against breaking spaghetti. Even as a little kid, I couldn't cut the spaghetti on my plate. There are photos of my mom helping a preschool-age Frigilux wind spaghetti on his kid-size fork.

Imagine the revulsion most people would have if you took a beautifully grilled ribeye steak, put it in a blender, then poured it onto a plate and served it. That's how Italians view breaking or cutting spaghetti.

and god forbid you use a spoon to twirl your spaghetti onto the fork!! Spaghetti was never broken at our house either.. moms italian though was born in the UK.
Myself I prefer spaghettini, slightly thinner than standard spaghetti noodles and cooks faster.. about 7 minutes as opposed to 10-11

I always break my spaghetti, which doesn't matter since I cut it up when I put it on the plate.

We always had the American version of spaghetti. The sauce my mom used was much like the Betty Feezor recipe Hans posted a while back.

We always try to make our own to dry and keep.  No Ronco but the real hand cranked machine.  We always use some fresh for dinner tht night.  drop itin and 3 minutes and it done.

I always break mine in half, and when I make pasta salad I break the the noodles into thirds.

Although I was born in Uruguay,and my mother too my grandfather came from Naples. So we still have strong habits from Italy. My mother taught me not to cut spaghetti. I think it comes from a folkloric tradition lost in the ancient times. Anyway all Italian people don't want to break spaghetti. And it's funny to eat them as long as they are!. Buon appetito a tutti. =Relief =Society=Casserole=

Relief Society Casserole

1 1/2 lb. Hamburger
1 large white onion (Chopped)
3 1/2 Cups uncooked Egg Noodles
1 Can of Corn with juice
1 Can of tomato soup
1 (Mid size) Can of tomato sauce
2 Cups of grated SHARP Cheddar cheese (a little extra for the top)

Saute onion in a skillet, set aside. Cook hamburger, season with onion powder and a little garlic salt, add onion. In a large bowl, mix all ingredients together (reserving a little cheese for the top AND taking care not to break the egg noodles). Pour into a 13 x 9 baking dish, top with a little cheese. Cover tight with foil, poke one hole to vent in the center. Bake at 350 for about 45 minutes, or until noodles are tender.

Tried this last night. While I wouldn't serve it to company, it was as close to comfort food as anything. Easy to make and really quite tasty! Loved not having to cook the noodles first. I did put a little garlic in with the basil and oregano.
