Hello:

We are looking to replace our old (>15 years old) washer and dryer. Our laundry room is upstairs, and noise is a very important factor to us. I heard that though most of the new front loaders are quiet compared to old models, it maybe be only when the washer is on the concrete floor in the basement and not upstairs... Has anyone purchased a new washer for upstairs laundry recently and is satisfied with the noise level?

Thanks for the advice!

In June I purchased a KitchenAid Ensemble set for my upstairs laundry room. It's quieter than the KitchenAid TL set it replaced, and the Bosch FL set before that. It's nearly silent when washing and rinsing, and doesn't shake the floor when spinning. Whirlpool Duets and Kenmore HE3 and HE4 machines should offer similiar performance.

If you choose a front-loader, the Duet models are probably your best bet, since they seem to have the best balancing protocols; they won't let the machine go into high-speed final spin unless the load is pretty well balanced. Having said that, the floor in the laundry needs to be very solid, and I would advise strongly against buying the optional pedestals. Any vibration which does occur will be amplified by them. Among top-loaders, the new-generation type like Oasis or G.E. Harmony would be excellent choices.
