Quixtar's Liquid Fabric Softener: In the dryer?!

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Notice the directions for using it in the dryer. Is this something people do with other liquid softeners? I've never heard of such a thing. No plans to do it, by the way. (The 'pistol grip sprayer' they reference is just a common spray bottle; available for $3 at their website.)

The smell (this is the Original Scent version) is kind of Snuggle-esque. Nothing too impressive. They recommend 20 ml (4 teaspoons---the same dosage as for a medium load using Downy Ultra) to 25 ml (5 teaspoons). I accidentally used 30 ml on a huge load of bath towels in the top-loader. It dissolves into the water more quickly than my usual Downy Ultra.

Towels emerged from the dryer with almost no scent; they just smelled clean. Took a shower and used one; was impressed that absorbency was excellent---noticeably better than when using Downy Ultra, even though I overdosed a bit.

Price: $20.00 (Yikes!)

I have heard of using liquid softener in the dryer via that method, but never tried and not likely to do so!

Interesting that the directions base dosage on water hardness. I never figured that to have an effect on softener, but perhaps it does. I've always thought load size is more related to softener dosage .... being as it's basically a lubricant for the fabric.

There was a Texize product late 70s called AllWays Soft...you could use it in the wash cycle (double dose), rinse cycle (single dose) or in the dryer (on a washrag).

My mom always used Free and Soft...it was the packet which you stuck to the dryer fin. It was my job to replace it on the 1965 Sears Kenmore...

I've got a friend whose mom keeps an ice cream tub on top of the dryer filled with diluted softener and washrags...just dampens one of the washrags and tosses it into the dryer.

Gansky--- There are no instructions for how much to dilute the softener when spraying it on a rag for use in the dryer. I thought that was odd, too. My gut tells me 3-to-1 would be a good ratio. Again, no plans to try it.

Jamiel---No recollection of AllWays Soft, but do remember Free & Soft; never used it, though. And you're another person who's familiar with the liquid softener in the dryer technique. I'd never heard of it.

I have never regularly used the FS in the dryer, but tried it. Nothing earth shattering. Like using a dryer sheet, it controls static pretty well.
The FS has had these instructions on the label for as long as I can remember. Back in the 70's when it was white and you used 1 to 2 teaspoons for a load through the nineties when they added bluing to the current formula upgrade.
No dilution for use in the sprayer, just spray a washcloth 5 times. They recommend using a washcloth exclusively for this purpose and washing frequently. It does tend to yellow, but the build up is less than expected.

Update: As previously mentioned, I've been converted to line-drying this summer.

Anyone who line drys knows that bath towels come off the line stiff and scratchy. I used Quixtar's SA8 Original Scent fabric softener on a load of towels yesterday and they came off the line noticeably softer---not as soft as they would emerge from the dryer, but softer than line-dried towels rinsed with April Fresh Downy Ultra or no softener at all.

I really like SA8 fabric softener. Leaves a pleasing, light scent and towels retain their absorbency.

Frigilux

Who makes this and where can it be purchased. $20 for fabric softener!! That's pretty steep, but I see the bottle says one gallon. Also, concerning the scent. You said it smells similar to Snuggle. The cuddle up fresh scent in the blue bottle? Unilever has since changed the scent and name. I really liked the old cuddle up fresh Snuggle. I have a bottle that says "now more refreshingly fragrant". I bought this right before they changed the entire Snuggle line. To date, my favorite fabric softeners of all-time are, and in this order: April Fresh Downy, the old Final Touch, and Cuddle up fresh Snuggle!

SA8 fabric softeners are made/sold through Quixtar, either online or by their sales representatives. As I don't wish to be visited by salespeople, I order online. You need to establish an account number and password and you're on your way.

The 1.04 gallon bottle gives you 200 uses. The scent is a bit strong straight from the bottle, but clothes emerge with only a light, clean scent. They have two other scents, Sunburst and Signature. I want to the Signature variety as the description says it's "apple blossom, cedar and musk." That sounds intriguing.

All my SA8 products (SA8 Detergent With Bioquest, Original Scent Fabric Softener, All-Fabric Bleach and Tri-Zyme) require very small doses. At first you think "That just can't be enough!", but they are all quite concentrated. If you follow the recommended dosage, it makes the products more economically competitive, too.

I buy their large sizes, just so I don't have to pay for shipping as often. But they do have smaller-sized products if you want to give them a try.

I remember my Grandmother once pouring a generous amount (that's right - pouring - not spritzing) of the old Final Touch fabric softener (oh, so Heavenly) on a kitchen rag and then tossing it into her 1980's Kenmore fully electronic push-botton dryer. I thought she was CRAZY! She had very hard well water, and I suppose she thought it worked better in the dryer - especially since she used tons of vinegar in the washer. She used Scotch-Buy detergent (which I believe was a store brand by Safeway) in the wash, which always smelled very good.

On the flip-side, does anyone remember the old Cling-Free dryer sheets (the retangular blue spongy ones)? At one time, the directions on the box said you could use them in the final rinse cycle of your washer in case you preferred to line-dry your clothing! My Mom's best friend used Cling-Free in her 1970's Avocado Kenmore dryer (paired with matching washer), along with Lemon Dash in the wash!

Jamiel - I also remember the Free and Soft! The lady a few houses down used that in her ghetto Magic Chef dryer in the 1990's. I had never seen such a thing before I saw her dryer. In fact, I was looking for that same product several months ago but I had forgotten the name of it. I was thinking it was called "Toss 'n Soft", which I soon realized was Arm & Hammer's brand of dryer sheets.

Cleanfresh - They still make the original Snuggle (undiluted), and it can be purchased in large bottles at Sam's Club if you have one. Might could also find it at Costco, but I'm not sure. The name of the scent may have changed, but if I remember correctly, the formula is still in tact. I really miss the scent of the old Final Touch, myself.
