a 1983 RR in mint shape, complete with probe and manuals for $15...

heavy

these old radaranges are pretty heavy too-especially the old,old,'60s type with
the electromagnet magnetron field and oversized twin-coil transformer!
I have a 1970 westy microwave that is a RR rebadge, any other RR rebadges?

Problem With Vintage Radaranges

Is that unless one is willing to fetch them oneself there is the risk of damage during shipping. Radaranges of that vintage aren't exactly light and require excellent boxing/crating to protect, especially the front control panel. It goes without saying the glass trays need to be wrapped and secured as well.

Sadly most shippers from fleaPay and elsewhere shove the things into any old box they find in the rubbish with a small amount of cheap thin bubble wrap/newspaper or "popcorn" filler. Someone once paid very dear money for a nearly mint RMC-30 off eBay only to have the thing arrive badly damaged.

I had mine packaged by FedEx and the packaging and shipping fees from Atlanta to Montreal were charged to my account to be sure they wouldn't blame the poor packaging or ask that I deal with the seller so she could get the refund and then refund me if something happened... It turned out to be a good thing because it arrived here in a damaged box and with some serious damage. Some parts were bent and it wasn't even working when I got it... I was lucky to able to repair it and that the dial glass wasn't broken. At least, I got full refund for the shipping and for the microwave (which I had paid 15$).
I also had problems with the Canadian customs and I was lucky that the seller was very helpful in this situation (she had to email many documents, including Google's cache of the ad which had already been deleted from eBay Classifieds to justify that I paid 15$ for it...). When she advertised it on eBay Classifieds, she thought that it might be useful to someone not rich enough to get a new one... She was even willing to give it away to anyone who needed it and she shipped it to me before I paid for it and first told me there was no need to send any money! She didn't think someone from Canada would see the ad and buy it!
After all she did, (and still being happy to help resolve the situation quickly) I had to send her a little gift...

Radaranges Should Be Crated When Shipped

Or nested in good deep styrofoam much as form fitted as possible. The box needs to be very strong if not double boxed.

Sadly when shipping internationally and that includes to Canada one cannot control what the ba****ds in customs do to check a package. While one understands the need to open a box to examine contents, often they take the thing out and aren't too bothered about how it's put pack. All someone's worry and care in regards to packing and protection shot to bits. Of course if the item then arrives damaged it's between the shipper and shipping service, customs won't lift a finger.

Hi all! Just picked up this Radarange®/convection oven from the outskirts of Atlanta...gotta love Craigslist. Original owner since 5/85, all pamphlets, a cookbook and a meat probe! As large and heavy as an old TV, and I'm sure I'll turn nuclear after using, but it's worth it. Love re-using, recycling older appliances than buying new, plus they're better made, IMO. It'll sit next to a GE Toast-R-Oven T93 from early 70's to keep it company. Love and thanks to Automaticwasher dot org!

Nice find! I've never seen a model that looks like that. Perhaps by 1985 they were selling more of the push-button models than the rotary-dial models, hence the rotary-dial models are less common. Yours looks mint!

Nice Find! Congrats!

Have always wanted to find a Radarange Plus to play around with. Nearly pulled the trigger last summer on a unit similar to yours, but later model that came just before the RMC-30. However it was all the way across the country and would have involved sending money to someone I didn't know then arranging shipping. Chose to pass.

Early microwave oven safety

As far as leakage is concerned, the early household Amana/Raytheon Radaranges are very safe. The Amana units with the very thick door (typical of late 1960s, 70's and forward) were incredibly effective at stopping RF leakage. That superb door seal system is hard to economically duplicate today.
The units to be concerned about would be microwave ovens made prior to the early/mid 1970s or units with any sort of door or cavity damage. Also be careful of off-brand microwaves from the late 1960's and very early 1970's. Even so, just have the leakage checked with a legitimate, certification leakage tester (Holaday, Narda, Leader brand checkers).
And check for leakage out the air vents. If the magnetron wasn't installed correctly, you can find leakage in the strangest places.

... and FORGET about that stupid cell-phone microwave-oven leakage test that the doofuses are spreading on the internet. Totally invalid.

One Little Niggle

About the Radarange Plus series is that the temperature was set to go no higher than 300F when using convection. IMHO and with everything I've read certain meats such as poultry and pork should never be cooked at less than 325F to control bacteria growth. Maybe the combination of microwave power goes to keep things at bay, I don't know.

Also with the Panasonic and Sharp offerings one had allot more flexibility in terms of temperature such as two stage cooking. That is start something a one temperature then switch to another furhter along. I like to blast roasts at a slightly higher temp for the first several minutes for a nice crispy skin. Three hundred degrees probably isn't going to do it.

Finally after using both the small Cuisinart and Maxim convection ovens and seeing the mess from fats and grease thrown off during cooking meats, one doesn't fancy what the insides of a Radarange or other SS interior micro/convection oven would look like.

My Maxim has continuous cleaning and the Cuisinart oven parts pop into the dishwasher.
