Rare Maytag part

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I thought Maytags had no clutch? As Fixerman said, "The belts will feel loose on a Maytag. They are tensioned by the motor slide. The belts are special fabric covered to allow for slipping as the Maytag has no clutch."

A lot of sellers will write their advertisements like this because they either don't know enough about what they are selling, or they want to get more hits with more searches.

EBay isn't the only source of misinformation.

This is from "Washing Machine Repair" by Douglas Emley, in the section on Maytag:

"During the spin cycle, the brake releases and the whole transmission starts slowly spinning around. A clutch built into the transmission allows slippage until the basket gets up to speed.... I do not recommend the novice trying to replace a transmission in a Maytag washer. If the transmission drive pulley is locked up, call a qualified service technician or junk the washer."

I guess the "hidden clutch" inside the transmission scares Doug... LOL...

The strange part of this....

I was at home depot about a year or so ago and spyed what appeared to be an amana washing machine. When I got to the machine (I had to sniff it out) It was a ge made by amana/maytag. I say amana/maytag because it looked just like the last of the true amanas, but at that time, maytag had already taken over amana and had begun the start of what was to later become the tragic sav.
