Whirlpool LA5300XPNO during spin cycle the agitator acts like it wants to ratchet instead of free wheeling. Makes a loud noise. Thanks

Finish

At the end of the spin cycle, can you freely spin the agitator?

Sounds like you may have a failing gear case.

When it's stopped the agitator does not spin. When it is just starting to spin you can hold the agitator but when it speeds up it starts grabing. Thanks

Short story: A friend could fix ANYthing on his Chevy van. But when he got the Kenmore trans out and apart, it sat on the porch for a week and he bought a rebuilt one.

Like a skunk its first line of defense is the SMELL! Like year-old frenchfry oil in an abandoned restaurant. Next, one comes to realize that ALL the parts are worn, not just the one that finally broke. So if you're going to replace EVERYthing, makes more sense to buy it that way already done.

Just a POV.

Simple Repair Solution

It was a very simple repair. Part 28 in the picture was the culprit. It is a very soft steel and had bent over a long period of time. When the motor turns in the direction to actuate the Agitate cycle part 28 was not fully engaging the Agitate Cam (Part 15 & 16)so it would not raise the racheting gear and would go through the cycle of trying to raise it again and again. I bent the ends until they would engage the cam. I replaced the Agitate Cam with a kit part #PS334449 $26.40 with shipping from partselect.com, although the old one looked fine. I also put a thrust washer to take up slack on top of the large plastic gear(23) as it had been rubbing the top case. I've run this washer through 30 cycles and it works perfectly and is very quite operating. Hope this helps anyone who wants a cheap repair to this problem!
