Hi everyone... I am in the process of re-doing a 40's Kelvinator Refrig and have to replace the door insulation. Any advice on what is best to use? I have my idea, but want to see if there is someone who has already done it and knows better. Thanks :)

I re-did the door seals on my '59 Kelvinator refrigerator, but I took the easy way out and ordered the exact size from an appliance repair place...
I got some advice from Robert (the webmaster here on AWO) about a dishwasher that might help: closed-cell weather stripping that you can get in most hardware stores (well, in the US anyway).
Hope this may help!

If you need a new seal for around the door, the closed cell foam is the way to go if you are not up for making the "universal fit" door seal material work for your door shape.

If you need the actual insulation in the door (between the door liner and the outer shell) then make a trip to a local insulation supply company. They can help you select a dense, easy to work with replacement material. This is a good idea if the unit has sat outdoors and been exposed to the elements for any time.

Most range restoration will replace the insulation around the oven and door liner as a matter of course. After so many years of cooking grease, humidity, etc., the insulation absorbs contaminates and becomes less effective. The Maytag Dutch Oven range claimed to have forty pounds of rock-wool around their ovens.

Thank You

Thanks Guys for the advice/info. I will check out the closed cell foam today. One thing is that the current gasket has a lip that slips behind a framing on the door and the actual seal in front of it. The door liner then slips between the front part of the gasket and the framing on the door. I found a website- www.antiqueappliances.com -which stocks material that looks like what is on it now, but it is about $100 for the amount I need....so I will see if the closed cell foam will work. My original question was actually about the inner door insulation, so I will check out options today. Thanks Again-Joe
