We all know this to some degree,but I gotta' say: I MISS OUR REAL AMERICAN WORLD!!! Sears with washers lit up & woo-woo'ing,beach balls spinning in the air from a canisters exhaust in the vacuum dept,all manor of 'point-of-sale' visual aids. Happy people selling/buying things made here. Cars/appliances/EVERYTHING had more flash,but with a simple overall statement of ''You're getting your dollar's worth & then some'' without needless complexity. It was Drive-In Movies,Burgers & Malts,FUN stuff. Now it's Drive-thru,Car title loans,payday loans,few 'hangin-in-there' sales people selling electronic throw away JUNK made who knows where,& WHAT will be the next unGodly thing we're to succomb to? Hey,I'm ranting,I can't take much more,I like this forum,& maybe my Time-Machine will go 'woo-woo' when I build it! Ol' fart, Bill

The days when people took real pride in their products and services. Just 10 yrs younger than yourself, I remember my parents going to stores, car mechanics, etc, and they knew who you were. Granted we were lower middle class growing up, but everyone greeted by parents like they were the most important people in town. They always got a fair deal and treated with respect. The mom and pop appliance store intown "Stamms TV & Appliances" store where my mom got everything. I remember going with her to get her new washer and old man Stamm said "good god, you're finlly giving up that washer I sold you years ago. How many kids do you have left at home.....This is the washer you need here, I know you want basic". My Dad going to B.O Dalberts for car repairs, many a time he said, "Aww don't worry about it, it was a simple fix, catch me later". I know it sounds like "Aw those were the good ole days" routine, but truly, people took pride in their goods and services and made you feel important.

You got it, buddy! Years ago, a person did not have to question the quality, reliability, or safety of anything, whether it'd be a washer, vacuum cleaner, power tool, what have you. It was made here with pride because the people working in America's factories put themselves in the shoes of the consumer. At the end of day, they still relied upon the very things they produced to live comfortably and raise a family. Now it's each one for themselves, almost a survival-of-the-fittest mentality. It never ceases to amaze me at the dirty looks a person gets for just holding the door open for someone when entering a store! Basic manners and moral values are endangered species....
 
i used to love to go to sears

and look at their appliance displays! i remember their washers filled with water and small colored balls that bounced around in a whirlwind of color as the washer agitated! what fun!!!

and maytag used to have a display model of their belt driven dishwasher in appliance stores with that plexiglass front on it. i would walk up and turn it on (if it were off) just to see it's wash action in detail!

now it's all boring and crap for sale! i wanna throw up everytime i walk thru the appliance section of home depot or lowes!

but at least we know what it used to be like don't we! we can appreciate what we had!
 
What defines who and what we are?

What makes a person an Aussie, a Canadian, an American, a Brit., a Frenchman, a Spaniard, a German....?

Is it the food? The language? The dancing?, the appliances, the architecture, the prevailing culture?, the blood-line? The social customs and traditions?

All of these are subject to change. As much as we miss how life was in our formative and younger years there is only one true thing that defines a
person/culture/race/ethnicity/nation. Their way of thinking.

That changes too, but takes much, much, much longer.

The only thing in life that doesn't change is that there will be change.

P.S. I miss the older top-loaders very much! They will always "reek" of "home"!

Yes, indeed. And in a lot of cases, not for the better. In the United States, we sold off our manufacturing to China. The United Kingdom was no exception. Even Japan went along with the lemmings. And after China, it will be Cambodia, Viet Nam, and everybody else who will stop at nothing to feed their masses. That's where the multinationals will build their factories, as long as Bernanke's helicopter can print enough to finance the added debt. I strongly feel that we have about led our Australian, European, and Canadian brothers off the cliff with some of the stupid stunts we pulled, selling our technology and trash canning our ability to actually make stuff.

What makes matters worse for us: Our economy is 70% based on consumer spending. The other 30% is military. We depend on countries like China to buy our treasuries, just so we can finance our consumer-based service economy. One day, China is going to want its money back and we won't be able to pay. So, what happens when China wants our natural resources instead? Well, either we go to war, or we let them come in and take what they want. If there is anything left for them to take.

I WISH!!!

If by some bit of magic , I could go back in time and buy anything I wanted, then transport it thru time till now...I could finally have a kitchen and laundry exactly like I want, pink Youngstown cabinets,pink Frigidaire or Westinghouse stove and refrigerator,and a pink Kitchen Aid dishwasher, now since my fantasy life could probably get me committed..I know that is pure fantasy, but would'nt it be FUN!! Oh yeah, the laundry...A pink 63 Lady Kenmore set.
