Phil:

Yes thats my shack. I need to post some new pics. There was a good amount of progress last summer from the pics seen on flickr. Didnt do much thru this past winter though. We're almost ready for drywall.

We do have a lot of natural beauty here. It hasnt changed much over the years. Still rural and quiet.

Ive seen recent discussion on here concerning metal kitchen cabinets as to how the different brands compare and which was the best. Who made the ones sold by GE and how did they compare in quality?

Who made GE kitchen cabinets?

GE made the cabinets, I believe from what I have read elsewhere. (Sandy(danemodsandy) has some metal cabinet insight on GE, too).

By the way, I've read that some GE metal cabinets have been prone to fading, but I don't see that here in the photo- you could always repaint if that was a real problem(?), down the road.

Drywall! Then you're getting alot closer and bet your happy about that. It's always a good feeling when you get to that stage.

Re steel cabinets..

The absolute TOL was St Charles, Geneva was good, then you had Morton, who sold them also as Kelvinator, these were wild looking because they had sliding glass doors, Lyon was another popular one, I have them over my washer and dryer, Youngstown was probably the biggest seller, and although no where near as good as St Charles, to me they look the best...St Chrles were sort of the Packard of metal cabinets!

The house is going to seem small inside after the drywall is on. Its been one open space with the bare stud walls for so long Ive gotten used to it that way.

The cabinets with the sliding glass doors are way cool. Love the look of them. Wouldnt mind finding a set like that.

So how do the GE (Republic Steel) cabinets rate?

Any one here in the Newtown/Philadelphia, PA area?

That would be willing to take a look at the cabinets on my behalf if it comes to me needing that? I heard back from the seller and he said he would be available this weekend if I wanted to take a look at the kitchen.

Unfortunately Im located 3 hrs from them which makes it difficult to just stop-by to take a look at them myself. I do have to measure how much wall space I have to fill in my kitchen to see if these cabinets would work for me.

As we here are "like minded" about vintage appliances and other items I feel someone here would know what to look for and be able to give a good appraisal of them. I would certainly compensate you for your time and effort.

Republic and GE

I was reading an article on retrorenovation...they mentioned that renovators are also seeking out a few other steel kitchen cabinets with the following labels:

GE, Republic, American, Crosley , Beauty Queen, and and Morton.

I guess this suggests that GE had a label, but Republic constructed and finished them and Republic had their own brand, as well. So that's interesting..in fact, there's alot to read about ...anyone care to scope it out at retrorenovation, here's the article on metal cabinets...we had some in my parent's upper flat(house was ca. 1925).

That "WTH" dish drainer contraption is a Simplehuman dish drainer. Although it looks out of place on that counter they're great for people like me that do dishes by hand. They cost about $100. I've had one for years and I like it.
