The handle is supposed to be perpendicular to the spout so that you tip it to the side to pour. The snap band and winged lid were among the design variations from the late 40s to early 50s when the last design change gave us the handle that often had a hanging ring, the solid band around the pan held together at the handle with the 2 two-part screws and the round knob on the cover. I think I have sets of every variation of the Flameware from the first to the last, sorta like Dilsey; the beginning & the ending
