You may be in luck...

I have one. It is installed (original)in my recently acquired 1960 Combination. I *might* be willing to let it go...as my refrigerator does not cool and may require either a new compatible replacement or a freon charge, I'm not quite certain whether I should remove it or not. I check in here often and will see how your needs go--I may just break down and supply you!

Also...

You can hunt like holy hell on ebay. I HAVE seen ONE up there this year...most of the time you'll have to use search criteria with variations on the relay number...sometimes with/without spaces/dashes etc. Most sellers of stuff like this don't take time to precisely define their items like these...it is a pain, but stuff like this gets mislisted and if you're sharp eyed and diligent, the stuff does turn up at the strangest times...In the meantime, I'll put some hard thought into making mine available to you.

Generic relay

Bud, that's exactly what I was thinking for a replacement.  One size fits all, and you used to be able to get these at most any appliance parts store, but I don't know if that's still the case.

Allen, I have been doing an exhaustive search on eBay. You are right, they are miscategorized all the time and so many eBay sellers are lazy and do not provide adequate descriptions to enable you to find the item. It is definitely a pet peave of mine. I will keep your part in mind, but I think I am going to first try installing the compatible part that Bud suggested. I am in a hurry to get this fixed and I don't want to rush you into making a decision about your fridge you may regret.

Bud, thank you for directing me to a compatible part! I think this is the part I am going to purchase as long as I can figure out the horsepower of my compressor. I haven't seen any obvious markings or tags on the compressor, so not sure how I am going to do that. I may have to buy both and see which one works if I can't figure out the horsepower. Wish me luck!

Call them

Kelly,

Give them a call. It is a small shop in Clayton, GA and the owner has been working on vintage refrigerators forever. I bet if you tell them what you are working on, he'll be able to tell you exactly how to wire in the relay. Probably can even tell you the compressor size in question and the pin-out of the 3 electrical connections of the compressor or wire color if permanently soldered on. He helped me with my 1955 Frigidaire needing the very same part and basically told me the colors of the wires coming out from the compressor and how to wire in the new one he sold me. A new vintage Frigidaire relay I saw a few years back on flea-bay, but they wanted like $70 for it. Would have been nice to get that OEM relay but since it is so well hidden, I can live with the after-market one. But a universal after-market door gasket that doesn't look like the original, NO WAY!! lol

Kelly,

Here's a link to another generic relay.  The RO41 is probably the one rated for your fridge.   You sure can't beat the price.

Wiring examples show the various 3-terminal configurations and which relay leads go where.  None of the examples show a compressor with four terminals, though.

John, I took a couple of photos of the wiring. Maybe I am wrong, but it looks like 4 wires to me.

Ralph, thanks for showing me the Supco R041. Unfortunately, like John pointed out, if the compressor has four terminals it probably won't work, which means the one that Bud recommended at Antique Appliances won't work either. I have an email out to Antique Appliances to confirm it will work and which one to buy, so we will see what he has to say. At this point, I am not very hopeful that a generic one is going to work.

I am so frustrated!

GE Compressor

Hi John,

I want to confirm that I understand which cover to take off. I have inserted a red arrow in the picture of the compressor wiring pointing to the cover that I think you want me to take off to see the terminals. Is this correct? I just want to be 100% sure before I just willy nilly start taking apart stuff. :) Thanks!

My offer stands--

Kelly, if you are in a pinch you get take mine (it is like new and works--cosmetically it's as shown in photos up here earlier).
I am not going to need it as my compressor is bad. Let me know your "must have by" date.

My Offer Stands

Allen,

Yes, I think I do want to buy the relay. I am not having much luck finding anything. How much would you like for it? I need it as soon as possible.

Thanks!

Good Picture, it looks like a wire is connected to all four terminals, in any case a regular three wire relay should not be used.

Your best bet is probably going to be installing a newer compressor, but I would try to stay with an R-12 compressor, and R-12 refrigerant.

You need a 850-1000 BTU compressor, I would grab one from a larger ref from around 1988-1994. You will need an experienced tech to do the change out, there used to be a mounting kit available to allow a more common compressor to replace these GE compressors.
