This showed up here in Super a few weeks back. I contacted the seller, had a friend in Chicago pick it up, and John packed it up and shipped it when he was back in Chicago for his college Homecoming. It arrived yesterday. It doesn't work right now (except for the halo, of course) but I think I am going to go to the guy who fixed the Motorola, and see what he can do with it.

Finally, I had to share this... The picture isn't very good, but I was able to tweak it enough to bring the message about obtaining "your engraved nameplate" out. I wish I could find that instruction card!

The engraved message above the nameplate part (that the flash obscured) says "Sylouette by Sylvania ~ registered in the name of"

your wish is my command

The controls are, left to right: Brightness, Contrast, Volume, Tone, Power, Channel, and something called "picture prompter"

There is also a control for the "halo" that is off-screen to the left. It looks just like the other controls.

For being about 49-50 years old...

That set is in remarkably good condition. You really got yourself a find there! The cabinet looks nearly new and the black trim looks like it could easily be touched up.
I am willing to bet that you may just may have to recap the set (not too awfully expensive) and maybe replace a few tubes. BTW, I have a huge collection of vacuum tubes that are NOS. If you need any tubes for this set, contact me. BTW, I am very generous!

That looks great...

and of course, nice touch with that "TV ashtray"/objet d'art, you didn't think that would squeak by me, did you?

Ok question, this may have been answered in the past. Is the "halo" flourescent lighting underneath, or something else?

Kevin, I don't know for sure, but I think it might actually be Neon. It doesn't behave like any flourescent lighting I've ever seen.

And the "object" is just a weird footed bowl that I've never had a place for, But it looks good there. Glad you like it :-)

Allen, what does "recap" mean? New capacitors?

Yes, recap is short for replacing the capacitors. Back when this television was built, the use of paper capacitors were in common use. These only last so long and then they lose their capacitance or leak or even unravel and can go out of spec. Then the picture on the TV can degrade.
Nowadays they have mylar and other type of capacitors that don't have this problem. They can last almost forever. I have a freind who had one of those GE portacolor sets, from 1966 one of the first years for those. The picture was dim and it had a tendancy to roll. He recapped it for about $35.00 and the picture is now as good as new. Very bright.
If you know someone who is handy with a soldering gun and has a basic knowledge of how television works, then this could be pretty cheap.
But first I would have the tubes tested. If those check out and the picture is still weak, I'd go ahead and recap it. The biggest part of that cost is the labor.

If you don't find anyone locally who wants to tackle the recap job check out "antiqueradios.com" or "audiokarma.org" as those two sites have boards for vintage TV issues and a lot of helpful guys, including halo-lite fans.

Ken...Audiokarma

There is something indeed up with their website.

I joined there last year, and my account is still active. But whenever I go to the site on this machine, the one I have used for years, it says my IP address is blocked. I have had emails back and forth with the administrator, and this isn't an account issue, it's an IP issue. I have given him my IP address and he has yet to respond with a solution.

I can go in on my work computer just fine.

Think they are having a few issues over there...but it is a great site.

I haven't been accessing "audiokarma" much lately but just tried and got in fine and I've been a member for a couple of years. There is an advisory message there re: likely downtime on the forums as they are working to upgrade/change their server. If you can get onto "antiqueradios" and you post an item about access to "audiokarma" somebody there will probably be able to help you as there is quite a bit of crossover between members on these two sites. Ken, someone on "antiqueradios" may be able to advise if there's a different e-mail address for the AK webmaster. That full mailbox issue makes it sound like the webmaster isn't accessing that one anymore and it may be a Catch-22 situation where newcomers have no way of reporting the problem. Take the long way around through a query on "antiqueradios" and you will likely be guided to successful AK access.

I found a guy through "antiqueradios" who was local to me and recapped my 10" Admiral bakelite TV from 1950 for $100. Considering it only cost me $5 many years ago and these sets are desirable and are among the handful of vintage sets that command a hefty price, I think I got a good deal. Anticipate similar cost for your halo-lite's recap as long as the picture tube is still good. They have their own following and you probably wouldn't have any trouble unloading it in good working condition if you decided to do so down the road.

I think it's sweet that there was a time where someone would give their loved one a television as a gift, and have it engraved!
