. . . on Todd's thread about his Acme juicer find?

Today at Savers I picked one up for $20.  It's in like-new shape, runs fine, came with funnel and tamper but after doing some research, I found it's missing its "Blank" and "Screen" inserts to strain/catch pulp, etc.  Those are easily obtained on line and fairly inexpensive.

Model is G5-NG-853S, which is for residential use.  Direct from Champion it costs $225, have seen it on line for as low as $189 and as high as $279. Made in U.S.A. right here in the greater Bay Area.  Weighs a ton.  It's all motor -- 1/3 HP worth.

I'm going to download the instruction manual and once I have the Blank & Screen will give it a whirl with some apples like Todd did for his inaugural use of the Acme.

Nice find-and at a good price.Worth it even if you have to get the screen. The blank is used if you want to use the machine to make peanut butter.I have never tried making peanut butter with mine-I use the VitaMix or Blendtec instead.with the Champion-you put in the blank insert in place of the screen and feed shelled peanuts into the machine while its going-you are then supposed to get peanut butter from the end.

Fantastic score!!

I'm really looking forward to hearing how it works and how you like what it does.

I have to admit that I'm kinda "over" the ACME, eventhough I think it's well built:
A) I can't get over how much of the fruit is wasted. When I juice for the 3 of us, I wind up with a softball size (if not bigger) wad of fruit that is trapped by the pulp screen. I'm a huge fruit eater/lover, so I look at that with great disappointment. Sure, I've made some great tasting juice, but all the nutrients, fiber and all the other good stuff is about to get thrown down the disposal in the sink. Not cool.

B) It will barely make three 6-8oz glasses of juice before I have to remove the pulp basket and scoop all the trapped food out of it. During the last use, I did carrots with apples and pears. So each glass got one big carrot's worth of juice, and then I moved on to apples and pears per glass. Well, the carrot "meat" was slung into the pulp screen to the point that it was blocking the rest of the fruit juice from coming through the screen and getting out into the glasses. Pretty frustrating to drop in an entire pear, and see that no juice comes out. So that entire pear was completely wasted, as it was 99% trapped by all the other fruit that was trapped in the pulp screen. I had to stop juicing, take the machine apart (10 seconds) and clean all the fruit pulp out of the pulp screen.

Will I keep it and continue to use it? Yes, but only because it was 20 bucks. Had I paid full pop for it, I would probably return it for a refund. IMO, it's just waaay to wasteful. On the other hand, it does make a killer glass of juice.

Hey George,

It's been years since I've been in the Redwood City Savers, but it should be equally good. That's where I found my 1950 Admiral bakelite TV for $5 and 1950 Western Electric model 500 phone for about the same price. Of course, that was back around 1980. I haven't ever been to the Daly City one. Savers can be really overpriced on stuff, but this Champion and the K45 mixer I recently found there were real steals. BTW, I liked your blog on the KA mixers!

P.S. I watched a demo on line for the Champion and now have a better idea of how the blank works vs. the screen. Will be ordering those today from "Fern's Nutrition" site that has the best price and cheap shipping.

re juicing apples... you pretty much have to peel them first otherwise the skins clog up the basket... You can find apple peelers pretty cheap as well.

I don't use mine anymore either.. too much fuss. Thankfully I only paid a few bucks for it as well.

I don't know how much I'll use the Champion either.  The demo advised that there's no need to peel anything.  All the waste is pushed out the front opening.  I think citrus is the last thing I'd use it for, since those fruits do require peeling first.

I can make some money on it if I decide to put it on Craig's List, but for $20 it's worth finding some shelf space for it in the basement.  I'm a sucker for all things beefy,  a pun  I shall leave as is for those who interpreted it as such.

Fresh Unfiltered Apple Juice!

The parts arrived quickly, so today I took out all the apples in the fridge that weren't being eaten, three very large and two smallish Fujis, and cut them up for juicing.  No peeling, just coring.

Wow!  This was so easy and effective.  The Champion made short work of it and did it fairly quietly.  I got slightly more than  three cups of juice and all the waste was pushed out the front and dropped onto a paper plate below.  There was a thick layer of foam on top of the juice, which I skimmed off.  Clean up was easy.

This thing is impressive!  I can see why I spot these machines so often in commercial environments.  I may want to have more fun with it after revisiting the recipes included with the instruction manual I downloaded.

ACME Juicer

When juicing the filter papers make the difference. They keep the screen from getting clogged and make the unit much easier to clean. I have both the ACME and Champion. They are both great machines but different. If you want filtered juice the ACME is the way to go. If you want the nutrients and the pulp of the item being juiced use the champion.

Good updates!

Glad you got the parts and had a trial run. So how much waste was there?

WMLASK; thanks for the tip on the filter paper. Does it just clog up though too? I did some juicing with the ACME again this weekend. We had a pineapple that was verrry ripe. So I did it, and apples, into 3 glasses, and added some cranberry drink. The pineapple turns out weird. It basically just foams. I had to stir the drinks to get the foam to blend in. They tasted good though. Still wound up with about a softball size wad of all the good stuff.

In the last week I've missed out on 2 screaming deals on Vita-Mix 3600's. One was on CL for $40, simple listed as: "S.S. Blender" with a terrible photo. I was second in line, and of course, buyer numero uno nabbed it. Then on Saturday while garage saling, what do I stumble across? Another 3600 in poor shape, but still ran perfect. Gal wanted $20, I offered $5 (that's how bad it was) and she didn't counter, so I gave her my # and left. Probably should have made a second offer, as the things go for $150-200 used on ebay and CL (in excellent condidtion).

Funny that 2 came up like that within days of each other.

I didn't measure the waste from the Champion.  I'll estimate that if I had packed it down, it would amount to maybe 1/2  to 3/4 cup.

I'll hang onto it.  It's such a formidable piece of kitchen equipment that it deserves some shelf space.  One of the better finds in my thrifting travels.

Yeah, I'd hang on to it too...

I'll keep the ACME for the same reason. It's very cool looking, in perfect shape, works perfect.....even if I'm not completely satisfied with it's process.....and it was under $20.

Hopefully I'll fall into a Vita-Mix in the near future......so to speak!
