One of the freezer baskets in my GE combination is fairly rusty. The rust looks like it's beyond the surface, so I don't think just sanding is going to fix it. Can these painted, or do they have to be recoated with something?

Jeannine,

If they're rusting, then they are a ferrous metal - not aluminum, not stainless.  You should be able to sand down the rust and coat them with your choice of coating.  I'm guessing that they steel was coated with zinc (galvanized), you could reapply a zinc-rich coating or use a primer.  As long as you remove the rust and coat the bare steel to prevent future rust.

Thank you Lawrence and Kenny

That's exactly the info I was looking for. I didn't think just regular spray paint would hold up in a freezer, but I had no clue about zinc rich primer or paint. I'm relieved to know that the drawer is salvageable!
